When can I lift weights again after breast lift and augmentation?

Question

I had a lift with a small implant in but worried about the scar opening . I have seen breasts scars opening in women who were 4-5 months in after breast lift . I am worried about lifting weights and working out.

Hello thank you for your recent question.   You are able to workout and lift weights after 3 weeks but I would easy yourself into it and start light first.  If you become sore listen to your body and wait a few more weeks if needed.  Best of Luck!

I advise my patients they can slowly and gradually return to weight training at 6 weeks post op. It is recommended to start with short light sessions and be guided by your body.  Slowly build yourself up to your normal training over the next weeks and months

Return to Physical Activity/Exercise: Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity for six weeks. You may, however, do normal activities at any time if they cause no pain or discomfort. Let your body tell you what you can or cannot do. Aerobic exercise will raise your blood pressure, which could cause late bleeding and harm your result.  Once you begin exercising again, start gently and let your body tell you what it can tolerate. Don’t rush!! It may require the full 6 weeks before you can do any upper body work-outs, yoga, etc.Make sure to check in with your surgeon for the best advice as to timing and your current stage in the healing process, and all should be well.

Thanks for you question. I usually advise my patients to wait 8 weeks before lifting weights at the gym. I would discuss further with your plastic surgeon about any concerns you may have.

After breast implant lift surgery, I advise the patients to take one week off from work.  At that point we take out their stitches and teach them the implant massage technique.  We suggest 5 times per day with the massage and no bra for one month.  The patients may return to work, but may not engage in any strenuous activity.  At one month, the patients start to wear a soft cup bra with no underwire and can start low impact cardio.  At two months they can wear an underwire bra and engage in more strenuous physical activity.  Breast massage continues forever, although only once per day.

Your surgeon is in the best position to advise you about your return to exercise based on your individual recovery after surgery. I generally advise my patients to wait at least six weeks before resuming vigorous activity and heavy lifting but its vital to ease slowly back into exercise and gradually build up the intensity. Listen to your body.

Thank you for the question. Long-term patients who undergo breast augmentation/lifting surgery should be able to return to all activities with full strength.

Timing to return to specific types of exercise will vary from one patient to another. Best to check with your plastic surgeon for specific advice. Generally, I suggest patients gradually ease back into the strenuous aerobic exercise 4 to 6 weeks postoperatively, assuming that they are doing well and there have been no complications. Lower body exercise can generally be resumed 2 weeks postoperatively. Use common sense, listen to your body, and gradually resume previous activity. In my practice, I ask patients to avoid contact and strenuous exercise involving the pectoralis major muscles ( such as push-ups, bench press, burpees, dancing on a pole…) for at least 3-6 months.
