Hi, I'm getting my surgery next month and I need to get lab work done and submitted to my plastic surgeron, dr. Campos in Mexico. My doctor in the states wouldn't approve my lab work for the bbl -and lipo and I called a few lab places and they won't do my lab work unless I have a doctors note. Any recommendations what I can do?
Answer: International Surgery (Brazalian Buttock lift and liposuction): information Dear Ms. Meemo1011,Thank you for your question. An alternative is seeking out a another primary care phyiscian or go to a Urgent Care and ask for the lab request from whomever examines you.I strongly believe everyone has the right to choose their health care providers. While there are many excellent surgeons in other countries I would strongly advise to have your surgery within driving distance of your home.Why:1) pre and post operative appointments2) what happens if you have a intraoperative complication? What medical care is a available is available? Will your insurance cover the complication? Who pays if you required a air ambulance to be brought home?3)What if you need a revision?4)it's best not to fly for several weeks after surgery (pain, blood clots, etc).5)price should be only one of the factors... The savings could be more based on air flights, lodging, travel time, inconvenience especially if a revision would be needed.I suggest you make several appointments with experienced Plastic Surgeons who have in office financing options and who are not only Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery but in addition ideally a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (denoting by membership as having met additional criteria and a focus on Cosmetic Plastic Surgery). My best wishes for a uneventful surgery and recovery, Dr. R. A. Hardesty, MD, FACSDiplomate and Certified by the Am. Bd. of Plastic Surgerywwwimagineplasticsurgery.com4646 Brockton AveRiverside, Ca 92506(951) 686-7600

Answer: Lab Work The Only group that should advise you on this is your surgeon or surgeons office. I am sure they have run into this problem before.

Answer: Lab work for Mexico? Your PCP should be okay approving your labwork if it is done as part of a visit with them. If you make an appointment with your PCP for a physical exam/yearly physical and labwork, they should be fine with that.

Answer: Lab work before cosmetic surgery in Third World countries I'm sure you can find some Dr. willing to write you a prescription for lab work. The fact that your primary care doctor did not want to get involved it's a telling sign. In the United States most young healthy people don't get lab work before elective cosmetic surgery since they're not really indicated unless someone has underlying disease. The change of ordering less lab tests has evolved slowly over the United States and is based on science. Other countries and other doctors have different standards where they want lots of information. Most of it is not relevant to having cosmetic surgery. For older people or people with significant medical problems medical work up including lab tests can be incredibly important. People with underlying medical conditions or older people should probably not travel to Third World countries for cosmetic surgery. Dr. Campos can most likely have a lab test done when you arrive in Mexico. Perhaps flying in a few days before your procedure would be prudent so you can also have an examination. Considering you live in a country that most people consider having the most advanced medical care in the world I would take advantage of that. Most likely you'll get the least amount of cooperation from local plastic surgeons in regards to getting your blood tests. You could try calling local urgent cares or alternative medical providers. With enough phone calls you'll find someone willing to order the tests for you. I doubt you'll get a doctor from real self to do it though. Best of luck with your upcoming travel and procedures. Best, Mats Hagstrom M.D.

Answer: Lab work for surgery in Mexico That is just one of you problems with going to another country. Other concerns: 1 .who is going to make sure you are cleared for surgery. 2. Where are you going to stay to recover 3. How are going to get down there and back 4. Who is going to take care of you if you have complications 5. No leg to stand on if you have medico-legal issues Is it really worth it when you have excellent surgeons in your neighborhood. I would recommend that you have surgery with a board certified surgeon close to your home.
