Flying for 10 hours after a BBL?

Question

I live in Norway and really want to do a BBL, but I would have to travel to the US to do so. I was wondering how long I should be staying in the US before I travel back home? Is 2 weeks enough, or should I stay 3 weeks? And if I stay up to 3 weeks, would i be able to sit for hours at the time?

Thank you for
your question.Best to stay in the US for 2-3 weeks.  The longer you can delay flying following the surgery, the better.  I would recommend that you discuss this question with your surgeon.  Your surgeon is your best resource as he/she is most familiar with your medical history and how you will be healing following surgery.  Your surgeon is also the person who will give you clearance to fly.

The best way
to assess and give true advice would be an in-person exam.

I would recommend staying for the 2-3 weeks before taking a long flight to lower your risk for blood clots. With sitting, I tell my patients to avoid sitting directly on the fat transfer sites for 6 weeks after surgery. There are a couple different products that you can use when you are out and about that will assist you while sitting. There is the Sit Cane that you can unfold and sit down anywhere that puts the pressure on your thighs, not your butt. There is also a company called BootyBuddy that you can find on instagram that makes post-procedural BBL pillows that allow you to sit on any chair without putting the weight on those injected areas in your butt as well. Putting the least amount of pressure on your injected areas during your healing phase will ensure you get the best result possible. Make note that alternate trips back to your Plastic Surgeon here in the U.S. for touch ups may be needed. Hi and thanks for the question. You should plan on staying at least 2 weeks if not 3. Sitting on your buttocks depends on the surgeon. I allow patients to sit in a pillow. You will need to get up and walk after your procedure including during your flight home. Best of Luck - Dr Hardy...

When you travel for surgery it'd be optimal to stay up to 3 weeks.  Especially with a BBL which requires a bit more recovery time.   As far as post op instructions since it's best not to sit on the buttocks for more than a few hours.  In the first few days of post op most doctors will advise no sitting and then slowly after 12-16 days post op small amounts of sitting.  Flying after surgery should be done when your doctor feels you're ready, for risk of blood clots.Best of luck.

With my out of town patients, I will give them Lovenox pre-operatively and for one week post op to minimize the development of a deep venous thrombosis (DVT). I recommend staying in the US for at least two weeks to help minimize complications such as a DVT. If someone is high risk;  such as a long flight (>4hr), liposuction >2liters, >3hrs of surgery, I will use lower extremity compression devices for three weeks. Good luck.

Thank you for your inquiry.In my opinion, two weeks is enough recovery time after a BBL to travel back home on a 10 hour flight. It is important though, for you to get up and walk around every hour. We also recommend that our BBL patients purchase the Booty Buddy pillow to reduce pressure on the buttocks when sitting. You could purchase this for your flight back home. When i perform a BBL I use the best techniques for optimal fat survival in the grafted area. Depending on the amount of fat necessary to fill the buttocks, multiple donor sites on the body may be considered. After liposuction has been performed, a closed sterile system is used which ensures the fat tissue is never exposed to the air. This keeps it safe and purified for reinjection into the buttocks. I use P188, a triple-wash antibiotic that sterilizes the tissue and separates the healthy fat from any tissue that may not survive the transfer process. Then i reinstate the fat little by little to make sure that the layering is done properly, effectively and that the results are smooth and shapely.Good luck on your endeavors!Dr James Fernau
