Keloid scar risks on Asian skin (areola)? I am getting a breast aug with a lift

Question

I am Asian and getting a modest breast aug with a breast lift. I tend to get hyperpigmentation from scars due to my ethnicity which fade to some degree over time. However, I am keeping my fingers crossed that I don't experience keloid scarring. My question: Can women of color develop keloid scars around the areola where the nipple has been repositioned in a breast lift? I hope not. Any tips on how to lessen keloid scarring is appreciated.

There is variation in how people heal breast lift procedures. The best scars  come from the lollipop lift so try to find a surgeon who knows how to do it. I would warn you against the donut lift however. Those scars can stretch out a lot over time

Dear vtgirl,
scar prevention begins in the OR during the surgery when I meticulously close wounds in multiple layers in order to reduce tension and reduce scars width. I tape my incisions during the early postoperative period to reduce micromotions of the tissues so the incision can heal earlier. I also use compression garments and later Biocorneum gel.

A keloid may form anywhere on the breast or chest. Using scar products like Mederma or Scar Guard as soon as the stitches or tapes are removed can be very helpful.

Keloids may happen in any scar and keloid around the areola is possible. This can happen in any ethnicity, while some suffer more. A silicone sheet may be used after the surgery to prevent (or reduce) keloids and if it happens, there may be need for a steroid injection treatment.

Keloids can occur anywhere there has been a skin injury, including surgery.
We must differentiate between hypertrophic scars and keloids.
A hypertrophic scar represents an abnormal response to tissue injury, resulting in deposition of excess collagen. Its prevalence is increased after infection or in wounds under mechanical stress. The scar doesn't grow beyond the boundaries of the original skin injury. It will usually regress over time.
A keloid is a genetic inherited disease in which scars progressively thicken beyond the boundaries of the original skin injury.  These lesions may progressively thicken.
Keloid prevention is not always possible due to heredity.
Scar minimization can be achieved through prevention of early infection with a regimen of frequent postoperative wound care until the scars become stable. Avoidance of sun exposure to the healing scars should be performed. Moisturization of the scar should be performed. The application of silicone gel sheeting to the healing scars may prevent thickening but must be applied for at least 3-6 months after the procedure.
