Very swollen in the lips 24 hrs. after Restylane Silk injection, how can I quickly reduce swelling?

Hello,In our experience, and that of many other practices, Restylane SILK produces a very delayed and dramatic swelling response.  It's unfortunate if you were not prepared for this.  However, panel member's advice to squeeze and apply pressure is highly discouraged even more so with a thin product such as SILK.  Not only may this interfere with the product placement, it most likely will exacerbate the swelling.  In addition, gentle and intermittent icing is recommended.  In our experience, we have found that a simple "cocktail" of a few products will quickly calm down your reaction:  1) do not massage or manipulate/squeeze 2)  Ibuprofen per package directions 3)  anti-histamine such as Benadryl as per package instructions.  Swelling should improve with each passing day.  If the swelling is worsening or not improving, contact your injector for an evaluation and consideration of a prescription steroid.

Thank you for your question about swelling after lip injections with Restylane Silk.  It is very common to have anywhere from mild to significant swelling after injections with hyaluronic acid fillers to lips.  HA fillers are very hydrophilic  and hold onto water and fluid like a sponge.  This is especially so in the first 24-72 hours after receiving fillers. Antihistamines, steroids, and ice can help some, but it will resolve with time.  To be sure, see two or more experienced, licensed and board-certified providers in your area for a complete evaluation to make sure you are a good candidate and that it is safe for you to have treatment.

There can be some swelling after lip injections which can last 1-2 weeks. You can apply firm pressure between two fingers on the lips for a few days, for 5 mins a time, in order to help decrease swelling and even out the lumps. If you're unhappy with your final results you can have it reversed with hyaluronidase and try a different technique next time. Best, Dr. Emer

Thank you for your question. Swelling after lip fillers is very common. The swelling can last up to 2 weeks, so give it some time. If you still have concerns after that point, please contact your treating provider to discuss options. For my patients that are worried about swelling and/or bruising, I typically recommend they take arnica (a natural supplement) a few days before and after their treatment. I hope this helps. Thank you for your question.  I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing swelling after your Restylane Silk injections.  The lips are a very sensitive area, and are particularly prone to swelling after filler injections for up to 2 weeks after treatment.  I also find that Restylane Silk in particular tends to swell more than virtually any other lip filler product, to the point where I have almost completely stopped using it.It sounds like you're doing all of the right things - gently applying ice and cool compresses to your lips and sleeping upright should help the swelling resolve sooner.  I also often find that over-the-counter antihistamines (like Zyrtec in the morning and Benadryl at bedtime) can help with swelling as well.  Prednisone can also be helpful, but requires a prescription from your physician - I often recommend very low doses (10-20mg) for 1-2 days if patients are experiencing significant swelling after fillers.  Please follow-up with your injector to discuss your concerns.  Best of luck!
