Usually Kybella will work despite what you do once it is injected. The chemical reaction will proceed followed by inflammation. Ice can help discomfort. I recommend avoidance of anti-inflammatory medicine or steroids such as prednisone, aspirin, ibuprofen or aleve if possible. It may not be recommended if these medications have been prescribed for a medical condition. Smoking compromises blood flow and healing so I discourage smoking for all procedures and many physicians will not treat smokers for this reason.
I typically recommend patients avoid the gym on the day of Kybella injections, and lightly ice the area intermittently for the next couple of days. Pain control with medicine like Tylenol or Advil can be useful as well. Follow your physician's post-procedure instructions carefully.
The inflammatory reaction from fat dissolving injections takes about 6-8 weeks to have an effect. Anti-inflammatory drugs should be avoided if possible, but there is no evidence to suggest that the fat-dissolving properties can be increased or decreased by other means.
Staying well-hydrated and active will help to get your lymph flowing and mobilize the fat. I have found that doing a shock-wave treatment within a week of Kybella treatment helps maximize results as well-- find out if your clinic has a Zimmer Z-Wave or BTL Cellutone for this. And after that, you just have to be patient. It takes months, but it works!
The honest answer is that we really don't know. I would recommend a healthy, balanced diet, minimize exercise for 24 hours, and be patient with the expected swelling. Kybella can take 6-8 weeks to work it's magic.
