Swelling in lower back after lipo of flanks and tummy tuck.

this is very normal.  I would guess you are siiting most of t he time so the swelling goes to the back.  be patient . it will go away

Thank you for your question. This is nothing to stress over. Being only 8 days post op this is vert normal. You can expect swelling to last for a few months. Thank you for your question.It is very common that in conjunction with a tummy tuck that liposuction is done around the hips to help contour everything. This can lead to swelling in the flank/lower back area, that is why you are feeling the hardness and discomfort there. As you continue to heal this will subside, you are only 8 days post-op and still very early in the healing process. One thing I sometimes suggest to my patients is lymphatic massage, this helps decrease the swelling and discomfort while you are healing and it can be started the week after surgery. Thank you for your question. You should expect to have swelling for three to six months following tummy tuck and liposuction surgery. Use of a properly fitted compression garment will help decrease the length and severity of the post-operative swelling. As the swelling decreases, the contour of your abdomen, flanks, and hips will dramatically improve. Please follow your plastic surgeons specific advice regarding your level of physical activity. Thank you for sharing your question and I am sorry to hear of your low back swelling.  This has likely developed as a result of you resting on your back from the tummy tuck and liposuction procedure and should resolve in the first few weeks of recovery. I would discuss the use of a compression garment with your surgeon to see if it would assist with your healing. Hope this helps.

Certain positions can cause
some discomfort.  Sit straight and try to
get up to move frequently, this will help with the swelling.

Thank you for your question.  Swelling is very normal after a tummy tuck with liposuction.  You will especially notice swelling in the areas that had liposuction.  The body will start to rid itself of the excess fluid usually within the first week.  At 8 days, if you say that the area feels hard and very painful to the touch, you might be experiencing more than just swelling.  I would call your surgeon and go see him to double check that you aren't developing an infection.  And I certainly would NOT take aspirin, as it thins your blood and can cause bleeding, which also may be causing the hard, painful areas at your lower back.  Stick with tylenol after surgery.  Best of luck!

It is common to have a lot of swelling after liposuction.  Gravity will cause the swelling to go to areas that are more dependent.

Some swelling and pain in the lower back is common after Tummy Tuck and Liposuction of the flanks as swelling from the surgical area moves by gravity around to the lower back, especially when you are lying down after surgery. However, your degree of pain and swelling sounds a little excessive. Although unlikely you may have a collection of blood (hematoma) that has moved around into your lower back, and this blood collection is always accompanied by significant swelling, pain and tenderness. I would recommend that you contact your Plastic Surgeon and be re-examined to determine the cause of your pain.
