Was treated with Kybella. There was no burning/pain w/ injection. Did it not work? There is significant swelling (Photo)

Question

Post a botched smart chin lipo, I was treated with Kybella. I am very swollen. There was no pain or burning at site of injection. Does this mean the Kybella is not working and perhaps it was not the correct procedure to correct my botched chin lipo. Smart chin lipo was performed 5/31. I am 31 years old .

No, lack of pain doesn't mean it won't work. Kybella take 1-3 treatments every 6 weeks.  Patient will develop swelling and possible bruising after each injection that may last a few days.  The benefit of Kybella is each treatment is quick and completed in the office. However, some patients need more than one treatment to get desired results. Hope this helps.

Lack of pain doesn't indicate you won't have good results. It will take several weeks for results with Kybella. Kybella also needs a combination approach and a series of treatments. For best results with Kybella, I recommend a combination approach with thermage, ultherapy, exilis. VASER liposuction in combination with ThermiRF is an alternative for contouring the chin, if you're a candidate. Thank you for your posting and pictures.  Swelling is common post Kybella. Because you did not experience any pain or discomfort during the procedure doesn't necessarily mean that it wasn't injected properly. Some people have different pain responses to injections.  It may take several weeks to see optimal results and in some cases patients do multiple treatments to reach their aesthetic goals.

You don’t have to experience pain or burning for Kybella to work. Post injection swelling is very common. You have to give the swelling time to come down before deciding if Kybella helped or not .

I would not consider lack of pain an indicator that the treatment was not effective. In our clinic we have plenty of patients who tolerate treatment with Kybella quite well! The fact that you developed swelling from the treatment is a better indicator. Give it a few weeks and the results from the treatment will be more apparent. Make sure the provider took/will take adequate before and after photos so that you can really see the progress. Sometimes looking in the mirror everyday will prevent you from seeing the gradual results that are seen with Kybella.

I use Kybella a lot for permanently reducing the fat in the submental area. The fact that you did not experience pain doesn't mean anything as you were probably numbed well.  The fact that you have swelling from the procedure shows that the Kybella was injected and is working. I treat a lot of patients who didn't have the correct results after liposuction of this area.  Please consult an expert in Kybella for the best cosmetic results.  Best, Dr. Green

Hi, you have a great great question. Although it is unusual to feel no "burn" with Kybella, I would expect you to still get great results as it is very predictable if the injections were performed properly. The previous liposuction procedure itself may have injured or stunned  some cutaneous nerves, leaving you with less sensation from the kybella. Unlike other commenters, I don't recommend using every tool in the toolbox on post Kybella skin tightening. I have a very large quantity of Kybella   in my practice and,  depending on the skin laxity, we may employ either Ultherapy or Radio Frequency (RF) treatments sometimes both for additional skin tightening and smoothing. Be patient!

The fact that you did not experience discomfort with the kybella injections does not idicate that the treatment was not effective.  Many doctors add a numbing medicine to the product and ice the area to help with the discomfort. Most patients are very comfortable during the procedure and experience mild tenderness during the healing process.

Hi Needhelp777, Swelling is a fairly common aftermath of Kybella. After all, your fat cells are being dissolved and this brings on an inflammatory response. The swelling may also be due to the fluid injected into the site. With Kybella, you need to be patient because it may take weeks to see the results. In most cases, you would have to go back for follow-up injections even before seeing any change.
