Is swelling of the whole body normal after lipo on back roll, lower and upper abs and flanks?

The amount tumescent fluid infiltrated combined with any IV fluids administered during the procedure can lead to temporary fluid overload and swelling in your whole body. The elevated cortisol levels after surgery also can cause fluid retention. Typically by post op day #3 your body will begin to get rid of the excess fluid through the kidneys.

Swelling after liposuction is universal and peaks after day 2 or 3, with gradual resolution thereafter.  We sometimes see whole body edema persisting, and which is successfully treated with medication.  Best to see your surgeon.

Swelling is quite
common after any type of cosmetic surgery or invasive procedure. The majority
of “swelling” usually dissipates by 6 weeks. There are several ways to minimize swelling,
including limiting your exercise, wearing your compression garment effectively
and adhering to a high protein diet which benefits the healing process. In some
cases, lymphatic massage may be beneficial. Please follow up with your board-certified
plastic surgeon.

Swelling is normal after liposuction, How much swelling is too much, that is hard to say without an exam. Best to discuss with your surgeon.

Call your plastic surgeon and make an appointment to address your concerns earlier rather than later. He or she is there to guide you through this journey. And your concerns will be important to him/her.However, you are still early in your recovery phase and swelling can take months to truly resolve.. A few things that may help: 1. make sure your garment is still giving you the appropriate compression. If too loose, it's not helping. If its too tight, your legs will swell.2. decrease your salt intake. Drink plenty of water. That helps alot with the swelling. Many times patients drink less water thinking it will make the swelling resolve. The opposite is true. 3. Change positions frequently. If you are in a chair/desk position most of the time. Make sure you are getting up and walking around frequently to help with circulation. 4. Eat high fiber fruits and veggies to help with constipation and bloating which can also make you feel even more uncomfortable and "tight" in a compression garment.I hope this helps.

Hello! Thanks for your question. It sounds like you had quite a bit of liposuction. It's normal with even modest amounts of liposuction to have significant swelling, and the more liposuction you have the more you will swell. It's not always the case, but it certainly can happen where you swell so much that it actually hides your result as though you didn't have anything done at all. With time the swelling will resolve. I tell my patients that it will take a good six weeks until you will be anywhere close to your final result, and it takes six to nine months before the swelling is completely resolved. Make sure you are wearing your compression garments as directed. If you are concerned, call your surgeon. A quick exam will ensure that you just having swelling and not some other issue. Hope this helps. B Hermann MD

It is not uncommon to see temporary swelling of your lower extremity after liposuction of abdomen and lower extremity as it is the dependent part of the body.You must ambulate and keep your feet up when sitting.Sometime it may be due to too much fluid but you doctor knows best.Depending upon how much fat is going to be aspirated amount of fluid infusion is determinedYou will notice you will void a lot of urine.If the swelling does not go down in another day or two and you have no other complaints go back and see your doctor.
