I had liposuction on my lower abdomen and the doctor made 2 incisions for the procedure. It has been 6 months post surgery and I have 2 horrible incision scars. The scars look absolutely terrible and give away the fact that I had lipo. What can I do to make the scars fade away and hopefully completely disappear? I would like the cheapest and most effective solution.

Answer: Skin incisions after liposuction While the results from liposuction are typically final around three months after the procedure, the skin incisions take much longer to heal.Of course, the initial healing is done, but the inflammation and hyperpigmentation will take as long as a year and sometimes a year and a half before they fade out completely. This is true for any surgery or incision made on the skin.Certain anatomic areas, such as the face, will heal faster while areas like the back will heal the slowest.Liposuction incisions are somewhat unique in that there is a significant amount of inflammation because of the liposuction cannulas going back-and-forth at an angle. This causes more inflammation with longer periods of hyperpigmentation. For those who have fair skin, visible incisions are rarely long-term concerns. The incisions will typically look the worst between six weeks and three months after the procedureSince the incisions bother you at this time, I would highly recommend you start a scar management program using silicone sheeting. My favorite product is called Safetac. It's available on Amazon for around $20.Cut a small piece that is just big enough to cover the scar and leave it on for three or four days. Then replace the piece of silicone sheeting and continue doing this for as long as possible, ideally a couple of months or until you are satisfied with the fading.Best of luck,Mats Hagstrom, M.D.
