What are the side effects of tummy tuck with mesh reinforcement?

I have read that a mesh reinforcement is not necessary in a traditional tummy tuck, however, I have also read that the mesh can help to give a better hour glass shape (as it acts like an inner corset). If I choose to have the mesh, I want to know what I'm in for. What are the negatives / side effects/ long term effects of using the mesh in a tummy tuck?

BabypicassoPhoto or physical exam would be helpful, but traditional abdominoplasty should be all you need. I am aware of the mesh technique, as it it very popular in Europe, but unless you have a hernia, or an extremely weak abdominal wall, mesh is not necessary. Also, since it is a foreign body, the chance for infection exists. Consult a board certified plastic surgeon in your area to explore all your options. Good Luck!

Typically muscle plication is sufficient enough to where mesh isn't needed to create an hour glass shape. Mesh can cause a reaction but doesn't normally happen. Thank you for your question. Mesh can be helpful in certainly surgery procedures, such as difficult hernias. However, in most tummy tuck it is not necessary. As far as the down side, these are some that come potential problems. Infection, breakage, possible secondary surgery for removal. Discuss further with your PS.
