I am looking to treat my gummy smile in the short term with botox, but I am worried that, while it may improve my gingival show during a spontaneous smile, it may lengthen my upper lip at rest. I feel as I have aged I have unconsciously trained the muscles around my mouth to have an ever-so-slight lift in my upper lip at rest—and, I wouldn’t want to add any length to my mid face at rest either! I am overanimated with the perioral musculature so that’s not really a concern of mine. Thanks!

Answer: Botox Can Work Well For "Gummy Smiles" I have been treating gummy smiles with Botox for more than two decades. While it can lead to some slight lengthening, the vast majority of people are extremely gratified with the results. Your doctor may give you a "trial" by injecting some dilute anesthetic rather than the Botox at the appropriate treatment sites. The anesthetic effect on the nerves can sometimes reproduce (albeit for only up to two hours) the effect of the Botox, just enough to give you some idea of the benefit you are likely to obtain with the actual Botox (or Dysport or Xeomin). Make sure that you consult with a board certified aesthetic physician with experience and expertise in the advanced uses of neuromodulators. Best of luck.

Answer: Gummy Smile Hi,Botox to the lip elevators might decrease some of the resting tension in the upper lip and cause a very minor lengthening of the top lip. Ultimately, pursuing treatment has a fairly minor level of investment as the results will only last 3-4 months. Best,
