Are massages after liposuction still recommended by plastic surgeons? I had one surgeon advise it and two others not. Does this mean that the surgeon that recommended it is using an outdated approach?
Answer: Lymphatic massages Hello! Depending on the amount of liposuction, lymphatic massages (although not mandatory) are always recommended to aid in the recovery process. Large volume liposuction typically involves a large volume of tumescent solution that is used to perform the procedure. This can leave patients with significant swelling in the post operative period. To aid in drainage and recovery, I always recommend massages beginning 5-7 days post op at a frequency of once a week for at least 6 weeks. Most patients report faster recovery, decrease in swelling and asymmetry from the fibrosis of liposuction. Good luck!

Answer: Lymphatic message after liposcution Lymphatic messages are an important part of your ultimate healing process. If you have undergone high definition liposuction which results in dramatic body contouring with creation of natural shadows and unveiling of muscle highlights performed in 360 degree fashion, then lymphatic messages are a must. If you are just removing a little fat from a localized areas using traditional liposuction technique then you don't need it. Please consider a consultation with a high definition body contouring specialist to appreciate your potential improvements and need for messages.

Answer: Massages After Liposuction Thanks for your question. At my practice, I recommend having massages as soon as possible after liposuction. The massages help in draining excess liquid as well as avoiding post-liposuction imperfections. You should do about 2 massages per week for about 4-5 weeks. Hope this helps. Always consult with a board certified plastic surgeon. Take care, Moises Salama MD, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon.

Answer: Massages after liposuction Dear Questionqueen76, I understand your concern. It is best that you consult your plastic surgeon regarding post operative care and management (i.e including massage techniques and timing) specific to your case. Your surgeon knows your condition well and has preferences on when and what to use for faster healing and recovery. Post operative care and management depends on the type of surgery performed and the technique used during surgery among other factors. It is best, however, that you follow your plastic surgeon's advice on post operative care management for a smooth and faster healing and recovery. Answer: Navigating Post-Liposuction Care: Are Massages Recommended? Good morning, Questionqueen76! Massages, particularly lymphatic drainage massages, can indeed be beneficial after liposuction. They can help to reduce swelling, improve circulation, and can potentially aid in smoother skin retraction, leading to a more uniform contour after your procedure. However, it's essential to wait until the treated area has had some time to heal before beginning massages. I generally advise my patients to wait around 2-3 weeks post-procedure to allow initial healing to take place. Starting massages too soon can cause discomfort and potentially disrupt the healing process. Every surgeon may have slightly different protocols and advice based on their experience, personal observations, and the specific circumstances of the procedure and patient. It doesn't necessarily mean one approach is outdated; it may simply reflect differences in opinion or technique. As always, it's best to follow the advice of your own surgeon, who knows the specifics of your case. Thanks for your question, and I wish you a smooth recovery. Sincerely, Dr. Katzen
