Yes, this is normal after just 1 Kybella injection.  I only offer my patients Kybella if they don't want to have liposuction ( I use Smart Lipo & Precition Tx Laser Lift) and are open to having 3 or more treamtents spaced 8 wks apart.  At 1 month it is normal to still have swelling and tenderness which will give the illusion of things being worse.  I don't recommend performing the 2nd treatment until all the tenderness and swelling has subsided.  I have found that with subsequent treatments there is less swelling.

Kybella is an FDA approved injectable which can reduce the fat beneath your chin. I let my patients know that on average I use two vials and three sessions. The results hjave been excellent. 

Hello, great question! It is not uncommon to still have tenderness and swelling a month out from a Kybella injection. 

 Kybella requires a series of treatments to get improvement. For best results with Kybella, I recommend a combination approach with thermage, ultherapy, exilis. VASER liposuction in combination with ThermiRF is an alternative for contouring the chin, if you're a candidate. Please see an expert.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Very few patients need only one treatment of Kybella.  Also, depending on the practice and provider you can get anywhere from 1 vial to 10 vials injected in one visit.  Most practices are injecting 2 vials at a time, which is only 4 ml of fluid.   Swelling should last for 1 week, at the most 2 weeks but should gradually be resolving over that period of time after the 3rd or 4th day.  If still persistent, you should visit your provider again to get checked out.  Again, some may see very minimal change after one treatment, but typically several treatments are required to see noticeable difference.   Best of luck, Dr. Giordano

Thanks for this question. I have not had a patient so far who has only required one treatment of Kybella. Most people need at least 2 treatment sessions 6 to 8 weeks apart. I think you should have an examination by your injector and see to the cause of your chin swelling. I don't believe they intentionally misled you, but instead I believe they are new injectors of this product and inexperienced if they said only one injection. 
If you're not comfortable returning to this injector seek an experienced and well-established plastic surgeon offering this treatment.

Sixty percent of individuals having Kybella require 6 treatments to achieve their goal.  I suspect you will need more treatment.  I would wait a full 6 weeks between Kybella services.  It is also not too late to simply have a neck liposuction.  It is truly a minimally invasive procedure that will accomplish everything you are looking for in a single, comfortable service that can be performed under local anesthesia.

Most patients have limited swelling from Kybella injections after a few weeks, though there may be some exceptions.  The results, however, may take a couple of months to evolve, and it is our practice to evaluate patients at 6-8 weeks to determine whether they require additional injections to achieve their goals.  Note that in the original studies demonstrating Kybella's effectiveness, patients received 2-6 Kybella treatments.  Although we expect to see some fat dissolved with each treatment, it would be unusual for a patient to note a significant change after only one vial.  Discuss your concerns with your doctor, and know that your results likely can be improved with additional treatment.  Best of luck!

Kybella permanently destroys fat cells in the area beneath the chin where it is placed. These fat cells are cleared naturally by the body and gone forever. During the six weeks following the Kybella treatment the body is remodeling the treated area. The permanent loss of the fat cells and the remodeling are what account for the visual results. The optimal number of treatments that will be necessary will vary, depending on the personal goals of the patients.

It is common for there to be swelling after any treatment, and Kybella is no different. The deoxycholic acid in Kybella will break down and destroy the fat cells causing your double chin, so while you may feel like it isn’t working, it is. The majority of patients require multiple treatments, though it’s at the discretion of your doctor and your desired results. The injections should be spaced about 4-6 weeks apart to allow for a complete reduction in swelling. Definitely talk to your doctor if you have concerns, as they are familiar with your specific case.
