Hi there! I have been looking into getting a BBL for a few years but I was born with a congenital heart condition (I am now a healthy 26 year old). I knew I would have to get my cardiologists' approval so I have gone through the process of doing tests and my cardiologist concluded that it would be okay for me if there was a cardiac anaesthetist and the surgery was performed in a facility with ICU on-site. I am wondering if that is something that any doctors can provide
Answer: BBL Hi Emma,This is a difficult situation. Although I understand your desire for this surgery, I am concerned about the risks associated to this elective procedure given your medical history. First, I predict that it would be difficult to find a board certified plastic surgeon that would be willing to perform this surgery given your cardiologist recommendations. Also keep in mind that since this procedure is for cosmetic reasons, additional fees associated to a hospital will not be covered by your insurance and would be your responsibility. Please consider your options and be safe.

Answer: BBL candidate Dear emmaleeadele, it is hard to tell for sure without an examination. You will need to get a clearance from your cardiologist prior to surgery. If you are considering surgery, I would suggest you consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination, you will get more information and recommendations. Answer: Are you a good candidate? Hi, if you can please give the details of your disease and examination notes of your cardiologist? Cardiac conditions are a spectrum and is not same as each other, so it is wrong to say you're a good or a bad candidate this at least 3 hours long surgery. Not heart patients but everybody must have the BBL surgery in a ICU-including facility.

Answer: Can accommodations be made for BBL patients with congenital heart conditions? Interesting question..Even your cardiologist is requesting "in patient" hospital surgery with potential attendance of the hospital's cardiac team and Cardiac ICU! This is an elective cosmetic surgery and the reasoning seems a bit faulty to proceed? As the surgeon, I would like to talk to your cardiac MD for their reasoning in stating you are cleared for elective cosmetic surgery. Plus the added fees and potential fees are so high, for example I suspect the major hospital would charge with the surgeon's fee in the $30,000+++ ranges. Follow up from you would be appreciated. Regards

Answer: Congenital heart anomalies and getting a cardiac anesthesiologist Based on what you describe I think you’re going to hit a wall when it comes to finding plastic surgeons excited about doing your procedure. It may be difficult to find an appropriate facility and often doing cosmetic surgery in a hospital can be prohibitively expensive. Hospitals for the nice see you are typically not favorable for doing cosmetic surgery and don’t price facilities like outpatient surgery centers do. Unfortunately cash paying patience can get stuck with what hospitals actually bill for which kind of being hundreds of thousands of dollars.Depending on how important this procedure is for you the only way to find out is to start interviewing plastic surgeons one at a time and see what each one has to say. it will depend on where they have privileges to operate and if they’re willing to take on your procedure. It will represent an increased liability for the surgeon and substantially more time would be required for logistics in regards to scheduling and postop care. You may find a plastic surgeon willing to do your case but my best guess is doctors may be apprehensive. At the same time delivering quality liposuction and fat transfer results is more difficult than most people believe so the importance of finding someone who is really talented at the procedure cannot be overstated. In your case you need to find not only somebody who is really good at doing liposuction and BBL but is also willing and has privileges at a hospital that does cardiac surgery and has reasonable facility fees. I’ll put together it may be a challenge. Good luck, Mats Hagstrom MD
