Can I start waist training after surgery? (Photos)

Question

Im about 5 days post op, I had lipo to my stomach and back fat and transferred to hips. I know its still early stages and im still quiet swollen, but i dont think enough fat was removed in my waist. So I was wondering how soon could i start waist training? I would wear my waist trainer along with my compression garment.

I assume you are referring to the corset-like devices, and not to exercises for your waist. In my opinion, waist trainers offer no real benefits and would squeeze you too tightly. You are still quite swollen, and wearing something that presses too hard against your flesh might actually aggravate the swelling rather than alleviate it. Also, in general, I don’t advocate long-term use of any kind of compression garments because they have health-associated risks, including weakening the core muscles. Wear your compression garment only for your recovery period. You should be quite pleased with your liposuction results after the swelling resolves within the next month or two. If you want to make further changes to your waist, hire a physical trainer. Or, wear the waist trainer only on special occasions for no more than a few hours. Please consult your own board-certified dermatologist to get his or her insights into how to optimize your liposuction results.

Thank you for your question. Best is to follow your surgeon's advice regarding recovery. After liposuction, patients are generally back to moderate cardio at around two weeks. You can be doing as much light to moderate activity as you want from now.  Patients can return to light activities almost immediately after surgery, normal activities 2 weeks after surgery, and vigorous exercise 4 weeks after surgery.  We usually experience a slow steady improvement for 3 months or so after surgery.

You are still very early in the healing stages and are still very swollen, you will not see the end result for another couple of months, I usually tell my patients to wait at least 6 weeks before wearing a waist trainer, continue to wear the compression garment.

I agree that it is definitely very early postoperatively to see full results. My only concern with wearing a waist trainer so early on after surgery is the risk of the trainer creating creases and contour indentations through the effect of compression in certain areas over others. In fact, I usually tell all my patients to avoid tight fitting clothing/jeans for a full 3 months after surgery in order to reduce the risk of these permanent contour changes.

My protocol for
swelling is as follows:
First stage garment to be
     worn 24 hours per day for one week. 
     
 The first stage has clips
 Second Stage garment to be
     worn for 3 months
 In rare circumstances we will
     use a small dose of a steroid and/or a water pill

Foams are great to  after lipo, and can help even out the
     skin.
