Is it normal/ok for my lips to be this uneven and bumpy 6 days after Juvederm fillers? (photos)

Question

Lips were totally symmetrical before injections. I feel two hard lumps that I can see almost translucent filler inside. Also, on the left side, which is bigger, above my lip is extremely firm to the touch. Should I wait longer to see if this smooths on it's own or should I call my doctor?

There can be some swelling and/or lumps after lip injections which can last 1-2 weeks. You can apply firm pressure between two fingers on the lips for a few days, for 5 mins a time, in order to help decrease swelling and even out the lumps. If you're unhappy with your final results you can have it reversed with hyaluronidase and try a different technique next time. Best, Dr. Emer

Thank you for sharing your question and photographs and congratulations on your lip augmentation!  Swelling after filler placement into the lips is quite common due to the thin nature of the tissues.  This swelling, and your results, will steadily improve over the next 10-14 days.  It often takes up to 2 weeks for fillers to soften and the tissues to appear more natural.  In the meantime try reducing the swelling by using cold compresses to your lips and elevating your head at night with a couple of extra pillows behind your back.  You may want to also consider using Arnica Montana and bromelain as supplements.  Should your lips continue to demonstrate unacceptable asymmetry at two weeks, talk to your injector about having it dissolved. Hang in there!

I would recommend starting to massage the areas that are lumpy and returning to your doctor after another week (two weeks after injection) if the problem doesn’t improve.

Did you have bruising in the area where the lumps are? That can be resolving induration or firmness that just might be a little deeper and take a little longer to resolve.  If it is too much filler, it can be reversed with hyaluronidase after the swelling resolves.  I would give it a couple more days. If you still have concerns, be sure to notify your physician.  Sometimes a little reassurance goes a long way. Best of Luck

Thank you for your question and for sharing your photographs.  Swelling is common after treatment with Juvederm, especially when the lips are injected.  Swelling can often cause the appearance of asymmetry or unwanted fullness.  Normal postprocedure swelling must be distinguished from the presence of unwanted filler.  Based on your narrative and photos, I would recommend seeing your injector for an in-person reevaluation in order to determine the best course of action.  Massage may be beneficial.  Hope this helps and best wishes!

The injection of these fillers in the lips in most patients causes a swelling that can last for 2 weeks. I am a little concerned that one side may have been overfilled. Unless someone is very uneven before filling a lip its important to know exactly how much filler was used and in area.If after 2 weeks the one side seems hard an uneven see your provider about reversing it with a hyaluronidase but be prepared for a bruise.
