I have "chuncks or flaps" of skin on either side of the incision (both hip areas). The plastic surgeon said this was normal. It is due to the fact that I was in a "sitting" position when he sewed me up, and the skin was "bunched together at the two ends. He told me there is another procedure (at an added cost) to fix those two areas once the initial closer heals. My question is, what is the name of this procedure, and what is a good estimate for the cost?

Answer: Dog Ears after Tummy Tuck The excess skin and fat can usually be removed by extending the incision further along toward the back of you hips. It is not an uncommon cause of revisions. I agree with your surgeon that the current incisions should have enough time to heal and the swelling decreased before revising the areas. In fact, as the swelling improves sometimes the dog ears will improve as well.Cost will vary depending on your surgeon and geographic location. Cost will also be increased if you choose to have the procedure done in the surgeons office versus a hospital or surgery center and if you choose to use an Anesthesiologist.Best Regards,Dr Stutman

Answer: Redundant Skin after Tummy Tuck Excess skin at the ends of the tummy tuck incision are not uncommon. Patients can develop this issue even if the excess skin isn't apparent during surgery. Treatment consists of excision of the redundant skin. This procedure can be performed under local anesthesia or sedation based upon the patient's and surgeon's preferences. Costs can be relatively low if the procedure is performed in the surgeon's office under local anesthesia. Best of Luck Dr Harrell
