Earlier in the year I scheduled a tummy tuck. Since that time I had medical issues come up and am believed to have Lupus, altho the last ANA test I had came back negative. The doctor started me on an anti maleria drug use for Lupus to see if my symptoms went away. I have been on the medication for a month now and several of my symptoms have gotten better. I don't see the specialist again until a few day before my planned surgery. Is it safe to move forward with my tummy tuck?
Answer: Lupus and tummy tuck Hello and thank you for your question. The short answer is yes....Someone with lupus can undergo a tummy tuck. I have performed tummy tucks on patients with some autoimmune disorders. This being said, it requires a high degree of involvement and coordination by your plastic surgeon. When I have patients such as yourself I will require a medical clearance from the rheumatologist. I will also call the rheumatologist to speak with them about the surgery so they understand what is involved so they can make a more accurate determination on whether the patient's body will able to handle the stress. Also, very important for any surgery with patient's who have immune disorders....MEDICATION....It is very important to figure out what medication you are on and the plastic surgeon should be aware of any medications that may affect wound healing. This is because many medications taken for autoimmune disorders and make one more prone to infection or wound healing issues. Prednisone, or steroids in general is a good example of this. So in summary it can be done but make sure you see a board certified plastic surgeon who has some experience with lupus patients! Hope this helps and wish you the best of luck!Ankur Mehta MD

Answer: Get Full Medical Clearance before Surgery mslisa2010. Sorry you are having these problems, but I would straighten out all your medical issues, BEFORE your operation. Tummytuck is an elective procedure, which means it is not medically necessary. I am certain your plastic surgeon will require medical clearance from your rheumatologist prior to surgery. Lupus should not be a contraindication to your surgery, but best to be sure. Good luck!

Answer: Lupus You will want to speak with your rheumatologist or the doctor you see for your symptoms and discuss your plans for surgery. You will also want to discuss your symptoms, treatment, and all medications with your plastic surgeon. You should be able to proceed with surgery as planned as long as your symptoms are controlled and you do not need to stop any of the medications you currently take.

Answer: Tummy tuck With a diagnosis of Lupus you would require medical clearance by doctor that manages your lupus prior to proceeding with any type of major surgery. You should clarify first if you have Lupus and get that cleared up before proceeding with surgery.
