Question

I have had axillary lift 2 weeks ago, no drains, but now large amount of fluid, seroma, left side and i can hear the fluid slosshing around when i walk. Do they numb the area before inserting a very scart looking needle?

Thank you for sharing your excellent question.  Each surgeon will aspirate differently but in general a small amount of numbing medicine can be used to introduce the larger needle required to drain a seroma.  Hope this helps.

Often one does not have to numb the area. I will often go right through the incision ( which is numb) to aspirate if necessary.

Don't be afraid of the procedure - it is typically only minimally uncomfortable and local anesthesia can be used to numb the area - which is usually less than normally sensate now.  Also, I recommend compression after the procedure to attempt to lower the chance of this fluid accumulating somewhat.  Don't be discouraged about this fluid, it should have no longlasting effect on your result.Cheers,Brad Remington, MD

Thank you for your question. Small amount of numbing can be used before inserting the needle. If the area is really numb then they may not need numbing medicine. Please let your PS know about your concerns.

Thank you for your question.  Typically a small amount of lidocaine is injected to numb the area before the aspiration needle is inserted.  More than one aspiration might be needed before the seroma resolves.  Be sure to follow up with your surgeon to have this addressed, and best of luck with your recovery.
