So most of my piercings I can take out and put none metal in but I have two dermals that I can’t take out. Can I still do it? If anesthesia is the problem can I be awake and have it not be a problem?
Answer: I want a BBL done but I have piercings. Can I still do it? If the dermal surface piercings are in an area that will be liposuctioned for the BBL, the piercings should be removed to lessen the probability of infection. You need to discuss the location of the piercings with your board certified PS. You do not necessarily need general anesthesia, but I do think it is a better patient experience. I have performed many of these procedures with local and sedation, but it is certainly not for everyone and risk benefit analysis must be performed for each patient. You want the most dramatic transformation possible, and you do not want to be in pain.

Answer: I want a BBL done but I have piercings. Can I still do it? We always like to remove piercings when doing surgery as electrical current is used during the procedure. This can cause burns around the area of the metal. Usually some tape can be placed over the dermal piercings but there is still a chance of a small burn. Just be sure to discuss with your surgeon before the surgery. As always, be sure to research who performs your surgery to ensure the best likelihood of a positive result.

Answer: BBL candidate Dear Alliielaine, it is hard to tell for sure without an examination. Generally speaking, all piercings should be removed prior to surgery. If you are considering a surgery, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations. Answer: Surgery with piercings Typically we ask patients to remove piercings that can be removed for surgery. It’s up to each individual plastic surgeon and how they want to proceed it. I think most plastic surgeons would be happy to do your procedures even with piercings that cannot be removed. This may include covering them with sterile dressings during the procedure or simply cleansing them with antiseptic soap. Piercings should not have an impact on anesthesia. Personally I perform liposuction with patients awake using local anesthesia with mild sedation. I personally don’t care if you have permanent or semi permanent piercings. We can work around those with no problem. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
