Juvederm Ultra in lips-- smile looks bad, so painful

Question

I got 1 syringe of Juvederm Ultra in my lips yesterday. I realize that I am still swollen so I am trying not to freak out too much, but when I smile I look like a duck and it is so painful to talk or move my mouth at all. I am just wondering if it is supposed to hurt this bad and feel so stiff? Also, my smile looks nothing like it did before I got the injections and I am not sure if it is just because of the swelling or because of how they did the injections? Should I be concerned?

Yes, this can be typical. There can be some swelling and/or lumps after lip injections which can last 1-2 weeks. Icing may help. You can also apply firm pressure between two fingers on the lips for a few days, for 5 mins a time, in order to help decrease swelling. If you're unhappy with your final results you can have it reversed with hyaluronidase and try a different technique next time. Best, Dr. Emer

Thank you for sharing your question and I am sorry that your current results have not been what you anticipated.  Though difficult to offer definite advice without a series of photographs, the thin nature of the lip tissues do leave them prone to swelling.  This typically will resolve in 2-3 days after treatment while the augmentation results will soften and appears more natural over the next 2-3 weeks.  In the meantime, I would recommend cold compresses to your lips, sleeping with your head slightly elevated, and using oral/topical arnica and bromelain to help speed your healing.  Hope this helps.

Pain and swelling are expected after the procedure. Severe swelling and pain are not. If so you should contact your physician for advice. The swelling usually lasts 5 to 10 days. The swelling can effect your smile.Good luck!

Swelling and soreness is typical after lip injections. If you have any concerns, you should speak with your physician. Everything usually subsides in about a week. If you are not happy with your results at that time, the filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. Getting good looking lips from injections is not easy and takes expertise and experience. It is not the price that is important, it is the results.

Thank you for your question.  The lips are a particularly sensitive area, and are prone to swelling and bruising that can last up to 2 weeks after filler injections.  Moreover, the Juvederm itself can feel hard immediately after injection - typically, as the Juvederm absorbs water, it softens and blends into the skin.  The stiffness you're experiencing is more than likely a result of swelling - it's impossible to assess your final results until the swelling has fully subsided.  Gently applying ice or cool compresses to your lips may help the swelling resolve sooner.  If in two weeks you are still noticing swelling or stiffness, please follow-up with your injector to discuss your concerns.  He/she may be able to gently massage out any remaining lumps, or dissolve them with hyaluronidase.  Best of luck!

Hello flgrl2,Thank you for your question. You should not be concerned at this time. The amount of discomfort, swelling and potential bruising is variable after the procedure you had is not considered abnormal and is far too early to make any assessment of your ultimate outcome. Give it 10-14 days for this to resolve and then if you have concerns return to your professional injector and discuss.

Only 1 day post injection.... Allow swelling to remove over the next 10 days at least. Try icing, PO steroids, massages.

I am repeating myself as I answered another similar post today with this..."In my opinion the reason you have this amount of swelling is not from the juvederm, it's from the needle. I used to see bruising  like this frequently when I used needles.  Since I switched to using cannulas  a few years ago I have not seen ANY such bruising as I did before. Some pts swell, but it's less than you demonstrate and without the bruising. I would seek out someone who uses cannulas.It is a remarkable difference."
