Will having reoccurring bacterial vaginosis prevent me from have a breast augmentation?

I have my consultation for BA on Friday and I've been saving up and finally have enough for the procedure which I have been dreaming of for years now! I now have the opportunity to do the surgery, and very worried I won't be able to do it because I suffer from BV which is a vaginal infection! I've been treated and the infection goes away but always comes back a few days later? I'm afraid that the day of my surgery I will have it? Does this mean I won't be able to have the surgery?

In all honesty, it is a decision for your surgeon to make. In general, no plastic surgeon wants to operate when an infection is present in the body. However, maybe your surgeon and Ob/Gyn can coordinate your surgery for a time when your BV is dormant. Best, Dr. Nazarian

Hi Kellykels14Thank you for your question.  It would be best to treat your vaginal infection before having the surgery.  This is something you might want to mention to your plastic surgeon and ob/gyn before proceeding with surgery.  Profilactic antibiotics are usually given after your surgery.  Best regards

No you may proceed with you BA surgery. Asked your ginecologist what to use before or after surgery to help you, like a topical vagina medication.The prophilactic  use of antibiotic during and after surgery will help you to avoid the condition.

This is not a true infection, but is best to wear it up before any surgery particularly those involving sterile implant placements.  Visit with your GYN.  Be sure to discuss with your own surgeon about how this applies to you, and whether they have any special concerns in your case.

That is a decision for your surgeon. The details of your infection will have a large influence on that decision. In general, we do not like to place implants when there is active bacterial infection elsewhere in the body. If your vaginal infections are periodically controlled, maybe your GYN and your PS can coordinate the timing of surgery with the treatment of your BV to keep any already small risk even smaller.

I think you will want to make sure your Plastic Surgeon and Gyn communicate before your procedure. Placing a prosthetic (implant) in the face of an active infection will probably not be very popular with your PS.
