My mother recently had liposuction in her love handles, tummy and highs. She also had a fat transfer and a tummy tuck. She has had on and off moderate fever after her surgery, which her surgeon says is normal. However, the area near her right drain became a red color yesterday so we went to the surgeon and he said her body might be rejecting the drain and that's what could be causing the fever. What do you think? Also, how is infection treated if that's what it is?

Answer: Could this be an infection after lipo Thank you for your question. You did not submit a photo to review. An examination would be needed to fully evaluate. Continue close follow up with your surgeon. Best Wishes

Answer: Infection post-surgical fever Hello, there. Well, you didn't indicate just how recent your mother's surgery was but if she still has drains in place then one could assume it's been within a two-week period or so. Yes, indeed, elevated temperatures can occur after surgery without necessarily indicating an infection at the surgical site. Your mother should be quite attentive to breathing deeply, coughing, and moving air in and out of her lungs. The lungs can be a source of elevated temperature. Redness at the place where the drain comes out is certainly not uncommon. I'm sure your surgeon has instructed you in proper cleaning and protection of that area until the drains are removed. Your surgeon seems to be very attentive to your mother's post-operative status. Make certain you two keep in close contact.
