The answer to this question would depend on the protocols of the surgeon you choose. I would recommend scheduling a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss your options as well as ask what labs/clearances you may need prior to surgery.
Hello Beautiful6286, thanks for sharing your question, every PS has his own preoperative protocol, and in some places it is mandatory under the PreOp have this test. You should be able to have an elective procedure done even being HIV positive, of course due to using disposable items for surgery might increase the cost. Make sure you go on consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon. Hope this helps and best of lucks. Dr. Luis Mejia.
In same places it is mandatory to have HIV test taken before undergoing elective surgery. Patient will not be denied surgery, but it is important for medical staff to know patient status because of safety concerns involving other patients and staff. Good luck.
Dear Beautiful6286,every plastic surgeon has his own preoperative protocol which he recommends to his patients. HIV-positive patients can get elective procedures too so you should be honest with your plastic surgeon. I would suggest you to discuss this with your plastic surgeon.Daniel Barrett, MDCertified, American Board of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery
HIV status by itself does not disqualify you from the surgery, although using disposable items for the surgery will increase the cost. In general, people with HIV are legally required to tell others if there's a chance they could be exposed to the virus. The rules vary from state to state, and there are a few federal regulations, too. You want to create trust between yourself and your plastic surgeon; withholding your heath status is not a good way to begin the relationship.
This varies from PS to PS. I do not test my patines for HIV or Hep C. I just take protective precautions as though any and all of my patients may have one or both. You do need to tell your PS as they need to know what medications you are taking etc. If your viral load is high and your immune system is compromised, you may get infected after the fat transfer and lose all of the transferred fat.
You should not be required to have an HIV test to have BBL surgery, but if your surgeon or clearing physician are suggesting it, you should feel free to discuss with them the reasons why it is on the list of blood tests they are requesting
We test all of our surgical patients for HIV regardless of surgery required. This is for the safety of the operating room crew.
They would not say that HIV testing is the standard of care but some clinics or individual physicians may ask for this before surgery. It is considered illegal to discriminate against those with positive HIV status. Because surgeons are supposed to take universal precautions regardless of HIV status of the patient there should be no precautions taken for someone who is HIV positive because the same precautions should be taken for all patients.Personally I would consider not choosing a provider or clinic who asked me for an HIV test before having surgery with them. There are a lot of talented surgeons out there who do not require HIV testing.
