Would I be considered a candidate for BBL with a BMI of 38? (Photos)

Question

My BMI is 38 but its all in my hips and thighs I just really want this fat gone i want to add some to my butt to make it a little bigger possibly im 26 years old a full time future medical assistant and a part time worker I've been this way my whole life mainly because I was on Depo for about 11 years and I've been off for 4 years. I eat regular and drink plenty of water I've lost 20lbs before doing just that. But I just need answers and help.

A BMI of 35 is probably the upper limit that a plastic surgeon would consider for this procedure. It is best to be within 10 pounds of your weight goal for three months prior to the BBL. Reaching your weight goal prior to the BBL will decrease the risks of complications during and after surgery and will maximize results.

generally speaking, you want to reach your goal weight before you consider a BBL, otherwise your results will be suboptimal if you continue to lose weight after the surgery. To be a candidate for plastic surgery, in general, you need to be physically healthy and at a stable weight, have realistic expectations, be a non-smoker and your BMI needs to be 33 or less.

Some areas and systems have restrictions to high BMI patients. Please be advised that particularly with cosmetic surgery these restrictions can be strict and in the present climate with the pandemic they have become even stricter. It is not uncommon for hospitals to refuse to carry out cosmetic surgery for people above 35 or even 30 in some cases. Other factors you should take into consideration would be aesthetic goals, skin laxity, restrictions to fat harvesting per session etc. This could only be established through clinical examination

Thank you for your question. In looking at your images and reading your story, you would be a candidate for a BBL procedure. Harvesting fat can be done either in the operating room or through minimally invasive techniques in the office under local anesthesia, which many of our patients love as the downtime is reduced. Ultimately it depends on the amount of work being done and the results desired. I prefer doing BBL cases with two forms of liposuction: one that removes/burns away fat, and another that essentially "shrink wraps" the skin for a more pleasing aesthetic. A consultation would be best to determine the correct treatment plan for you.

​A healthy BMI is between 15 - 24, the maximum recommended being around 30. If you are above 30, then you are encouraged to lose weight before undergoing surgery. The higher the BMI the higher the chance of complications. To make an assessment we need proper quality pictures similar to how plastic surgeons take before and after pictures.

From the pictures you did show I’m not sure that adding fat to your bottom is indicated but it is not for me to say what each individual person desires.

Reshaping the lower extremities can be a little tricky and I would encourage you to search out plastic surgeons who have extensive experience and a proven track record for this procedure.
