Time between each Kybella treatment, advice?

Question

I have read that you have to wait 4-6 weeks between each kybella treatment. I ask to doctors in Mexico and they told me I can do kybella waiting just 1-2 weeks between each session. Is this ok? Is dangerous to have the injections every week or two?

Whenever a dermatologist gives you a timeline, it’s a guide, not an absolute. The guide is based on the results of a number of patients considered together. Individuals vary, of course. The reason we recommend waiting at least 4 to 6 weeks ( I actually recommend waiting 2-3 months between treatments so one can see full results) between Kybella treatments is that your body needs time to heal from the injections, you may be swollen for some time after your treatment, and you want to get an idea of what your results are before continuing treatments. This last point is particularly important in the last stages of your Kybella therapy. Consulting a board-certified dermatologist will help you decide the best schedule for your individual healing pattern.

Thank you for your question. Kybella is FDA approved for treatment of a "double chin". We inject Kybella, a synthetic version of naturally occurring deoxycholic acid, below the skin. It dissolves and removes the excess fat.  As the fat is dissolved, an inflammatory response occurs and this can take 2-4 weeks to subside. There may be some bruising and redness for up to 1 week but these can easily be covered with makeup. Overall you can return to work immediately and most people would not notice that you have had the procedure.  You’ll see some results after the first treatment, but to get the best results, we recommend two to five treatments.
As always, an in-person consultation with a board certified dermatologist with cosmetic training is the best way to assess your needs and provide medical advice.

Kybella take 1-3 treatments every 6 weeks.  Patient will develop swelling and possible bruising after each injection that may last a few days.  The benefit of Kybella is each treatment is quick and completed in the office. However, some patients need more than one treatment to get desired results. Hope this helps.

It is best to wait 4-6 weeks. This ensures all the swelling is gone and we are treating actual fat.  I would not recommend treating again at the 2 week mark. Best of luck to you!

Dear mbv17,Kybella typically takes 3 to 5 treatments to work. This is why I've stopped carrying Kybella in my office.  I recommend neck liposuction more often then any injectable procedure for the neck now. It provides superior results gives me more control over the area than any injectable.  It also costs about the same as what you paid for your first kybella session. The liposuction can be done under local while awake in the office and recovery is about the same as kybella.Daniel Barrett, MD

It takes time to see what the effect of the kybella injection is.  Patients usually have swelling for 2-4 weeks.  I usually wait 6 weeks to see what effect one treatment had. Sometimes patients only need one treatment.

Kybella is a great option to permanently reduce the amount of fat under the chin. With this procedure there can be a certain degree swelling, redness, and tenderness for several weeks after the injections. In my practice I have seen the best results when spacing treatments 4-6 weeks apart so we can properly assess the remaining submental fat to be treated.

You can have your kybella treatments sooner than every 4-6 weeks. However, you may still be swollen or tender from the previous injections. It is probably best to give it some time before your next treatment so your doctor can better assess your neck.

Great question. There is no contra-indication on using kybella every 2 weeks, however, the reason we recommend injecting it every 4 or even better 6 weeks is that the swelling from the injection is less around week 6; and the second treatment will be more effective at targeting the fat as opposed to getting diluted by the swelling.
