Yes, this is extreme.The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recommends a maximum of 5 Liters of liposuction for an outpatient procedure.  The most important thing is to choose your surgeon correctly and make sure that he/she has the training and experience to meet your goals with absolute safety. Don’t settle for less than a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon with specialized expertise in this procedure.I hope this was helpful. It's hard to give you an answer since I didn't do your surgery, but if you're concerned at all about your garment please go and see your plastic surgeon.

I would not feel comfortable with that volume of removal and especially as an outpatient.  I would immediately see your plastic surgeon about your garment.  This can cause serious damage.

The Florida Board of Medicine set guidelines on liposuction to provide a measure of safety for the public several years ago.  They indicate that the maximum that should be taken in any outpatient liposuction setting be no more than 4000 cc.  The reason for this is that there can be a large fluid shifts when fat is removed.  The fluid moves from your intravascular circulation to the space where the fat used to be.  This can result in severe drops in blood pressure leading to potential life threatening complications.  If you are concerned, you need to contact your physician immediately.  If you are unable to reach your physician, then I advise that you go to your nearest ER to be evaluated.   Garments are made to be tight, but if it is cutting off circulation another potential consequence is tissue ischemia (lack of oxygen.)  Again, best to be safe and contact you physican.  Although the Florida Guidlines indicate 4000 cc being the maximum cutoff, not all physicians agree on this number. 

Standards of care have been established that removing no more than 5000 cc of fat during an outpatient liposuction is the upper limit. Liposuction is a very safe procedure when performed as an outpatient procedure in an awake patient using local anesthesia without general anesthesia or IV sedation. 

Recommendations regarding liposuction safety state that a limit of 5000 cc of lipoaspirate is the maximum safe amount for an outpatient procedure. Patients with volumes of lipoaspirate over 5000cc can and are done, but the patient should be admitted and observed for at least a 23 hour stay in a surgicenter or hospital. Check with your surgeon regarding the amounmt of swelling you should be experiencing.

There are well established guidelines that board certified plastic surgeons follow in order to ensure safety of the patient. If any amount over 5 liters of lipoaspirate (fat removed during liposuction) is removed from a patient, the patient should be observed overnight to monitor for dangerous shifts of fluid and electrolytes. If you truly had 9 liters removed in an outpatient setting, was your surgeon a board certified plastic surgeon? I have great concerns about what you have described.If your compression garment is cutting into you, it can cause problems, including circulation problems, thromboembolism (clot), and scarring, among other issues. Check in with your doctor right away for directions.
