Is dermal filler (Restylane and Juvederm) safe to get when you have perioral dermatitis?

I understand your concern. Fillers are used to restore lost volume in and enhance the appearance of the face. Having perioral dermatitis is not a contraindication to having fillers in the lips. With any condition recurrence is possible with or without filler treatments

Hello Rosa,Thank you for your question.  The antibiotics themselves will no affect the treatment outcome.  Unfortunately, there are no studies available on perioral dermatitis and injections.  There is a chance that your body can have a flare up post injection.  I would recommend speaking with a board-certified physician and see if they are comfortable with injecting you.  At any rate, I would highly recommend injecting when the PD is completely under control and the use of a hyaluronic acid filler and injected so just in case, the product can be dissolved.  Hope this helps.All the best,Carlos Mata, MD, MBA, FACSBoard-Certified Plastic Surgeon

Having perioral dermatitis that is being managed with antibiotics is not an impediment to receiving filler injections for lip enhancement.  However, one word of caution, topical anesthetic ointments often applied prior to filler injections will flare some patients dermatitis, so you may ask your physician to use a regional block for pain relief instead of a topical.

There is no problem getting injected as  neither the antibiotic or the underlying process will have any effect. Just be sure you see a board certified dermatologist

Best to obtain a clearance from Infectious Disease specialist. But there is ALWAYS a risk any filler could initiate a breakout.

Great questions. Fortunately, the risk of biofilms is low - so low in fact that there is not enough data to know the answer for your question because there are not enough people that develop them. However, I would tend to avoid injections when you are having a flare and I would routinely take antibiotics for a few days around the time of your injections to minimize the risk of an outbreak.
