Is eyelid surgery covered by OHIP if its for medical purposes? What about epicanthoplasty?

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty may be covered by insurance provided that you meet the conditions of your insurance company and that you have proper documentation from your surgeon and from an optometrist that documents properly a visual field obstruction.

Upper eyelid surgery is covered by some insurance plans if visual field obstruction occurs. Pre -certification is advised. 

OHIP may cover upper lid lift if it can be documented by an optometrist that peripheral vision is obstructed by upper lid laxity.  A form must be submitted with the vision test results by the physician or surgeon to OHIP for approval.  Creation of a lid fold or reduction of the epicentral fold is considered aesthetic (not functional) and is not covered by OHIP.

In general, a patient needs to have significant visual
impairment before a managed healthcare system will pay for eyelid surgery. It might be wise to seek the advice of a
certified oculoplastic surgeon or a plastic surgeon with Asian eyelid operating
experience to determine if the healthcare system or managed care system will
cover the cost of surgery.
