I'm 20 years old and I've been smoking weed for a few years. I'm scheduled for a breast lift 9/17 and my post op 9/1. I don't smoke cigarettes or drink but I smoke about a half a blunt a day. I use cigar wraps but I take out ALL the tobacco. My post op is in 2 weeks but my doctor told me stop smoking 6 weeks before surgery but I stopped smoking 4 weeks before my surgery. Will weed still show in my system? Is this something I should worry about?

Answer: Tests before surgery. I don't think that your marijuana use affects this decision any differently thatn it might for any other smoker. In my office I typically follow the same pre-op recommendations used by the hospital around the corner from my center. That is that, for people ages under 55. with no significant past medical history and no abnormal physical findings, then only a pregnancy test is required. Some patients feel more comfortable having more testing, but studies have shown that this is typically unnecessary.

Answer: Drug testing and surgery Thank you for your honest question. The easy answer is to say " Talk with your surgeon". The truth is that most standard blodd testing does not look for drugs. Smoking marijuana does not affect surgery in my experience. It has decreased post operative nausea in many patients. Your surgeon may feel differently, but usually ceasing smoking thirty days before surgery is adaquate.Best of luck.Dr. T
