Type 1 Diabetes, Hba1c & breast augmentation. What is considered an acceptable hba1c?

I like to be very cautious with my patients who have other medical concerns. I strive for a HbA1C of 7 or lower. Ideally, I like something around 6. Poorly controlled diabetes makes you high risk for both infection and poor wound healing as well as capsular contracture, complications that typically are very low in a standard breast augmentation. Have a discussion with your board certified plastic surgeon about this, and also consult with your Primary doctor or endocrinologist to help optimize you for the best result possible.

your diabetes should be under control prior to surgery. If you are considering a surgery, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations.

You can still be a candidate for breast augmentation if you have Type 1 diabetes as long as your blood sugars are in tight control. Your surgeon may request that you receive clearance from your treating physician before proceeding with surgery. Typically you want your HbA1c to be under 6.5%. In my practice, your Hemoglobin A1C needs to be 7 or lower. Above 7, you are still having elevated blood sugars which may interfere with healing and make you more prone to infection. I would suggest discussing this with your medical physician. also, surgery is stress and you may run even higher blood sugars than normal.
