Sensation loss over a year after breast reduction. Is this normal?

Hello, thank you for your question. Unfortunately loss of skin sensation is a side effect of breast reduction surgery. Sometimes early on in post recovery there is a lack of sensation due to swelling on the nerves, but the fact that you say its been a year this will probably remain this way. The thickening areas you feel maybe scar tissue and my recommendations for that is to do massage. Best of luck.

it is not unusual to have improved sensibility after a breast reduction even over a few years. You have multiple concerns and it seems you should certainly have a thorough exam and discussion with a plastic surgeon so you might understand your situation.

It is not uncommon to have some numbness on the lower half of the breasts, and unfortunately, loss of nipple sensation is a risk of the procedure. The sensation of your nipples being where they used to be is puzzling. Perhaps did you have very large breasts and the doctor did Free Nipple Grafts? I would ask that question and return to your surgeon.

Change in sensation is a risk with breast reduction surgery. If it has not improved after a year then the change may be permanent. The thickening you feel may be underlying scar tissue. If it is it should soften over time. Your surgeon may have recommendations to help you.

A reduction is a partial mastectomy and some breast tissue with nerves are removed. Having numbness is part of the risks of surgery as your surgeon explained in the beginning. The numbness may not improve since it has been a year. If scar tissue is thickening, you might want to see your surgeon for possibly Kenalog injections.

Most patience will have some changes and nipples and sensation after breast reduction surgery.
Most of my patients developed mild hypersensitivity, which typically settle down by six months.
It is possible to also have loss of nipple sensation from this procedure.
There isn’t much you can do about it if it happens.
