What is the best way to loosen and remove steri strips?

I advise my patients to keep their Steri Strips in place for about 2 weeks, if possible. At that time, they can remove the strips during their next shower after fully saturating the Steri Strips with water. If they are still having trouble removing the Steri Strips, I advise them to use adhesive remover pads. These are available at most pharmacies. Gently rubbing the adhesive remover pads over the Steri Strips will allow you to remove them painlessly. Congratulations on your recent procedure!

Steri-strips can be stubborn to remove.  After 10 - 14 days have elapsed since your surgery, the natural body oils and a warm shower should make them easier to remove.  As the edges curl up, snip them off; and the strip could continue to curl and be easier to remove. It's best to check with your surgeon regarding cleaning the incisions.

Dear hans0114,Thank you for your question. Every surgeon has their own preferences, but I like to remove the steri-strips myself. When I am unable to do so, I instruct my patients  remove them by saturating them in something oil based (for example baby oil or even olive oil) and then once they loosen up a bit, have them very gently and carefully remove them. Congratulations on your surgery! My patients are advised to jump in the shower, lather everything up with soap and water, and gently start peeling at a corner. They usually come right off, without pain, at that time. Be sure you do follow through with removing them when your board certified plastic surgeon advised you too.... bacteria tend to like dried blood, so the longer they stay on past that time, they risk infection and/or bacterial contamination. I'd suggest checking with your plastic surgeon for any particular advice they may have first.
However, You may be able to soak the steristrips in the shower before removing them or you can buy adhesive dissolving wipes from the chemist. Some common wipes will be- 'Remove' wipes or 'Uni-solve' wipes. Baby oil may also soften the adhesive allowing you to lift them off easier. All the best.
