My compression garment is damaging me. What would you advise?

Question

I had a full abdominoplasty and vaser liposuction to the flanks a week ago. I have been wearing the compression garment I was given by the hospital which is digging at my waist causing deep bruises which hurt more than any of surgery I have had. It is also strangling my thighs as it is so tight. I can't take any more and have swapped to a pair or Spanx I happened to have with my Macom binder worn on top. Will this be sufficient or is there any other garment you can recommend? Many thanks.

There are several different options for compression garments. They should be very form fitting but not at the point of being uncomfortable. Ask your plastic surgeon for alternatives.

I'm sorry to hear your having this problem.  I would recommend he contact his surgeon immediately.  Garments by themselves should not cause severe pain.  In fact, severe pain from a garment can be an indication they are causing damage.U should contact his surgery right away to avoid possible problems.Good luck.

If your compression garment is causing you severe discomfort then you should discuss your alternatives with your plastic surgery before making any changes.  Your garment needs to be a firm fit in order to do its job properly!

Compression garments are important after tummy tuck - which is why we all have our patients wear them. They help the swelling resolve and offer support to the trunk. These benefits, however, should not be at the expense of your comfort. The binder itself should not be causing bruising or "strangling your thighs". In fact, if the binder is impeding venous drainage from the legs, it may potentially lead to blood clots.It sounds like you need a larger binder which will hopefully resolve your issues. Abdominal binders come in differing sizes. Contact your plastic surgeon to get checked out to make sure all is in order and see if you can be provided with a binder that fits you better.I hope this helps.

Thank you for your questions. Compression garments are used after tummy tuck for support, to limit swelling and to reduce production of fluid under the skin flap. However, they do not need to be uncomfortable. Discuss with your PS to see the garments are good fit for you.

It sounds like your compression garment is too tight.  This can happen because you are experiencing a lot of swelling in the areas that were operated on.  Changing it out in the short term to a Spanx is a good idea.  Compression garments shouldn't cause bruising and pain.  However, some compression is essential to help heal areas of liposuction.I would call your plastic surgeon and see if he or she can order a larger compression garment for these first few weeks. Then, as your swelling goes down, the one that is too tight now may fit well in the near future.  Hope this helps!  Good luck!
