How soon can I walk my dog after a full tummy tuck?

I've had one consult and know that a mini tummy tuck isn't going to suffice, I'll need a full tummy tuck and lipo. I haven't yet found my surgeon. I'm really interested in recovery time - it seems to vary so much. What makes the difference? I'm fifty btw and not unfit but certainly no gym bunny!

Thanks for your question. If you have a small, well-behaved dog, he/she should be able to join you a couple days post-op. If your dog pulls and strains while you walk him, it is best to avoid this kind of strenuous activity for a few weeks. All the best,Dr. ResultsMiami, FL

Thank you for your question.  The greatest concern with walking your dog is for your own safety.  Walking is recommended the day/night of your tummy tuck and every day thereafter, but depending on how bent over at the waist you are, and your pain levels, caution must be taken to prevent your dog from pulling you, causing you to stumble and possibly lose your balance.  I would use discretion based on your comfort level, and ability to control your dog, as to when you will be able to walk together.  Best luck with your surgery!

I encourage my patients to be up and walking the day after an abdominoplasty. If your dog is well behaved there's no reason not to have him join you. If he struggles against the leash you will have to wait a few weeks.

This depends on the dog.  If you have a small dog you should be able to walk it within a week.  If you have a big dog that pulls you, I would wait a couple of weeks.  It is best to avoid this kind of strenuous activity for a few weeks.
