Can I remove my internal splint after rhinoplasty by myself?

Live in the USA (So no hospital for this guy... US bills would brake my wallet) & made rhinoplasty in Colombia because again, "IM CHEAP". Came back home to find out that still have the internal splints, so my question: Is there a way of removing internal nasal splints yourself? Thank you (Once again.. NO HOSPITALS).

When we use internal nasal septal splints for rigid fixation, we typically keep them in for 2 weeks postoperative and remove them. We suture our septal splints in place with a large permanent nylon suture that would need to removed by an ENT or a rhinoplasty specialist in the office with no downtime. Consulting with a local specialist may be necessary, and consider getting a copy of your operative report may be helpful for you. Wishing you well. Dr Joseph

Hello. Great question. With out pictures, I cannot provide a thorough evaluation. How long ago was your procedure performed? I would not attempt to remove the internal nasal splint with out having a consult. The purpose for these splints are generally to stop bleeding and to support or protect your nasal septum. Please contact a board certified plastic surgeon for a detailed examination. There are board certified plastic surgeon with their own private practice.  You will not need to go to a hospital to be examined. If necessary, your internal splints may be removed by the surgeon during consultation.

titusphb, I guess you are aware of the adage that says you get what you pay for. Now you want free advice in addition. I would suggest you work through your south american surgeon. You cannot remove plastic from inside your nose on your own. I would guess that most local plastic surgeons would be reticent to get involved in your care but you can try someone local and see if your out of the country surgeon will call him/her and tell them what needs to be done. It is really not a good idea to attempt removal of these splints on your own.  You can potentially cause yourself a lot of problems.  You do not need to go to a hospital, but I would at least call a few plastic surgeon offices and explain the issue and ask them how much they would charge for removal.  It probably won't be much, but it will be money well spent. Don't jeopardize your nose and the investment you just made in it.

It would not be recommended for you to attempt removal of your internal nasal splints yourself. You could damage your nose, cause unnecessary bleeding and create an infection by attempting this. Best to find a local US physician (Facial Plastic, Plastic or ENT) to evaluate you in their clinic and remove them for you. Best Regards,
