How many cycles of CoolSculpting would you recommend in one session? Should I be concerned that my skin will stretch? (Photos)

CoolSculpting will not make your skin any more lax than it is currently. In fact, often times patients experience some skin tightening in the months following their treatment. However, it is important to note that if you have significant skin laxity before CoolSculpting, and the fat that has been filling in that loose skin is eliminated, it can make the skin appear more curtain-like. This goes for any area of the body, double chin included.
This is why it is important to have a consultation in person with your practitioner, where they can physically examine the area and provide you with a customized suggestion on how to proceed.

Thank you for your question!We offer the CoolMini as a non-surgical alternative to liposuction for the right candidate.  For optimal results, 2 treatments are generally required. The treatments are separated by 4-6 weeks. Treatments are planned using templates of the CoolMini applicator. For fat localized to the sub mental chin, a single applicator per session may be required.  If there is significant fat more laterally in the neck, 2 or 3 overlapping applicators may be required to produce the optimal result. Hello, Thank you for your question and picture. Based on what can be seen in the picture you may do well with treating the area in a criss-cross manner, so one on each side but with a slight overlap in the middle. You may still need a second treatment directly in the middle, but you can wait to see results before deciding. It appears you have some loose skin in the area so you may want to look into Ulthera or Profound after your CoolSculpting treatment. It is imperative that you consult with a local physician in person to determine if you are an appropriate candidate. Good luck!

Absolutely best way forward is to have a one to one consultation with certified provider but at a glance you seem like a perfect candidate for overlapping treatment with 2 applicators. Usually it’s a one off treatment and my advice is less is more. With regards to skin laxity, at 36 we would expect good skin retraction post treatment. Good luck, Dr G x 

Hi and thank you for your question! We are seeing fantastic results with the cool mini, with very little to no downtime! Most patients only have mild swelling (if any) for a few days. It is difficult to say for sure how many applicators you would be a candidate for without measuring with the sizing tool. However, it does seem that overlapping at least two cycles would be ideal to get more definition in the jawline and cover more areas. This would also allow for a better result from the first session, because the two cycle would overlap in the center. We do see some skin tightening in this area (and cool mini did receive an FDA approval for skin tightening), but for best result you may want additional treatments to tighten the skin further once you cool mini sessions are complete. Additionally, we are recommending all of our patients start on a topical skin cream from Alastin called TransFORM body treatment. This has been found in studies to accelerate and enhance the fat reduction process from coolsculpting and to improve the appearance of skin texture, laxity and crepiness. Best, Dr. Grant Stevens

The good news is that CoolSculpting treatment in the chin area has been FDA cleared to tighten the skin in that area. We have seen great success with our patients in the treatment of the chin, I do think that a 20-25% reduction will be noticeable. Most patients need around 2-3 or more cycles in this area. Because the procedure is so customized, we would have to see you in person to feel the amount of volume present to give you an accurate number of cycles and to ensure that CoolSculpting is the treatment for you, as there are other cosmetic procedures available for the chin area if you are not a candidate for CoolSculpting. 

You have loose skin already and it is possible for skin to sag more once the fat is reduced.  Coolsculpting and coolmini can actually result in skin shrinkage as well (recently cleared for this) , though not as dramatically as surgery.   Applicator placement is different for everyone because it depends on your anatomy/fat.    We have had good success with overlapping cool mini applicators along the jaw line, meeting in the middle so that the fat under the chin gets treated twice.

CoolSculpting cycles are determined in person, this is because it depends on how much "pinchable" fat is present. You may benefit from 2-3 cycles per treatment, as well as from multiple treatments.While sagging skin is always a concern when we are dealing with volume loss due to fat reduction, CoolSculpting did just get FDA clearance to not only kill the fat cells under the chin, but also to tighten the tissue. 

Based on your photos you likely have 2 things going on.  First, you have a combination of skin laxity and likely some submental fat. You will likely get some skin tightening with your coolsculpting treatment, but not enough to off set the laxity that is already present.  If you are looking to say non-invasive I would recommend using Ulthera, microfocused ultrasound, to give some skin tightening as well. Please see and experienced physician to discuss your options.

I agree that your pictures seem to show more loose skin than fat. There may be a small pocket of fat in the mid line below your chin. See an experienced Coolsculpting provider for an exam. You will probably benefit most from a skin tightening procedure, but the exam can determine if significant fat also needs Coolsculpting. Best Wishes, Maurice Vick MD
