Can Botox cause (not cure) face spasms?

Question

It has been 8 weeks since I got Botox injections on my forehead and between my lips and my nose (to reduce my gummy smile). 2 weeks ago I experienced a muscle contracting on my forehead. Last week i experience twitching on my left cheek and it felt stiff. Yesterday I had 3 separate episodes of a facial spasm where my left side of the lip contracted upward. After the episodes my face burned a little bit. Is this a side effect of Botox maybe wearing off or should I go see a Neurologist?

Botox treats muscle spasm, if you are getting spasm I suggest then you see a neurologist to find out if there is something else occuring.  Best, Dr. Emer.

No, Botox cannot cause a spasm of the face because it is a paralytic agent. It cures spasms in the face when it's placed into the muscles of expression that have spasm or are hyper-contractile.

Botox is utilized to treat muscle spasms, so it would be very strange that it would be the cause of it. Consult with your Botox injector, but most probably they will refer you to an specialist or neurologist.Hope this helps,Dr. Gus Diaz

Sorry to know about your problem. Botox is a paralizing agent and completely relaxes the muscle. Botox itself cannot cause facial spasms. It is possible for the other muscles to compensate for the weakness. I suggest you should see a board certified plastic surgeon.

Thank you for your question. BOTOX can take about 2 weeks to have full affect, and typically lasts 3 months.  At 8 weeks you should have your full affect in force.  Occasionally if you relax facial muscles, the untreated muscles around the region can appear "hyperactive" by comparison.  It may also be possible that attempts to move the treated area can "recruit" adjacent muscles and appear as spasms.  However, BOTOX should not induce a new neurologic disorder. If you are having unusual movements after treatment I would see your BOTOX provider first before seeing a neurologist.  Best of luck.
