Is Botox treatment safe to use after I've had an adverse reaction to muscle relaxants during recent surgery?

Hi I've had dysport once before an couple of months ago in my forehead area. My forehead is not large so it was a very small amount. I hated the heavy feeling for the first month and felt quite trapped but after a month that feeling went and I loved the results. Now I want to do it again. However meanwhile I have had severe respiratory suppression during an unrelated surgery and my provider is not sure if tox is safe for me anymore? I'm from New Zealand and I'd love some expert advice please.

Sorry to hear about your adverse reaction to muscle relaxants.It is recommended that you undergo allergic testing to determine the nature of the allergy ( whether anaphylaxis ) and also to find out if there are any cross allergies. People who are allergic to Muscle relaxants can cross react to other drugs.Your specialist will be able to tell you which muscle relaxant you can have ( in case of an emergency).If you have a true allergy to a muscle relaxant then, you should carry a MedicAlert bracelet on you, and know which muscle relaxant you can have.I would not recommend Botox till you have had your allergic testing

Hello Hoops2007,Botox is from a different class of drugs than the muscle relaxants used used for surgery.  A reaction to one would have not relationship to how you would respond to the other.  Botox should not be used in patients with neurological or muscular disorders so if that was the reason you had problems with the surgery muscle relaxant then you should avoid neuromodulators.  The best course of action would be to discuss your concerns with your injector who can better evaluate what reaction you had.  In general you should be ok but better to have that come from a physician evaluating you.  I hope this helps and good luck.

One has nothing to do with the other and I'm not certain what muscle relaxant, do you mean paralytics (vecuronium, succinylcholine) or muscle relaxants (flex aril, soma, etc.)? You've had a predictable good response to neuromodulator injection before and unlikely you will have any problem with Botox.
