Is too much compression a bad idea?

I had my breast implants removed yesterday morning and I'm wondering if at this point if it's possible to have too much compression? I'm wanting to wear a sports bra over my ace wrap to keep the ace in place. Is that a bad idea?

There is such a thing as too much compression, when the compression prevents you from breathing properly and your lungs are not allowed to expand properly.  What you need is some pressure to minimize swelling and prevent fluid collections to occur.  that's all

I would suggest you speak with your surgeon's nurse to discuss your ace wrap and bra. You don't want to wear the compression wrap too tightly.

The two concerns with excessive compression are (1) the impact on breathing and (2) compromise of blood supply to the skin in the operated area. Wearing a sports bra over an ace wrap would be unlikely to cause either of these problems if applied correctly. The ace wrap should be checked to make sure it doesn't roll up and act more like a rope, since this can result in too much pressure on the skin.

The simple answer is YES. too much compression is a bad thing.  The real question is how can you tell what the right amount of compression is.  If your surgeon or her/his surgical assistants wrapped you with an ace wrap then I would use that as a gauge to the right amount of compression.  In implant removal patients the reason for the compression is to decrease the chance of fluid accumulating in the pocket where the implant used to be. Generally speaking a snug, well fitted "jog bra" does the trick. Sometimes patients are more comfortable and feel better with two jog bras.  The goal is for you to be comfortable and to keep the breasts compressed enough that they are not "flopping around". Too much compression can cause skin irritation or excoriation or in severe cases tissue necrosis.  Good luck.

Generally speaking, too much of “anything” can be a bad idea but I do not think any harm will be done by using a sports bra over the ace bandage that your surgeon has applied.  Just be careful that no dressing, bandage, bra… is cutting into your skin. Best wishes; hopefully you will be pleased with the outcome of the procedure performed.
