Lump under chin after chin lipo. (photo)

Question

2 weeks ago today I underwent lipo under my chin area. Only 1 incision at my chin. I now have this elongated mass under my chin. I have worn the compression band 24/7 for the past weeks. My doctor says the lump is a blood clotting. I thought if I worn the compression, it was not prevent fluid or blood collection? My concern now if the skin will sag, the clot will remain and the lipo was a waste of money? Any thoughts from other doctors is appreciated.

In my experience most of the problems that cause the fullness noted in your photo within the first few weeks resolve if the surgeon is a board certified plastic surgeon. Give it some time and follow your doctor's advice.

it looks as if you got a hematoma or seroma and this is causing irregularity and possibly scarring.  I suggest venus legacy treatments/massage, and compression.  Right now you just have to wait to see how it all heals.  Botox in the neck helps relax the muscles there.  If after 3-6 months there is still tightness and irregularity you may need this to be surgically revised.  If there is currently fluid or clots this needs to be drained.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Blood clots, or hematomas, after surgery should generally be drained if they are of any significant size. Hematomas are quite rare after liposuction. When they form, they usually leave discoloration, such as bruising, for many weeks. Clotted blood will also liquefy within two weeks. At that point, it typically does not feel firm. Patients typically develop a substantial amount of swelling and early scar tissue after liposuction. This is often perceived as hard lump. The more aggressive the procedure, the more of this lumpiness is often seen. If too much fat is removed, serious indentations can happen. These can be accentuated by the use of technologies like VASER when they are not used appropriately.  At two weeks, it is much too soon to make an assessment of what your final outcome will be. Any plastic surgeon should easily be able to diagnose and treat a small hematoma. Hopefully your doctor is a board-certified plastic surgeon and can easily take care of your situation and help guide you through the healing process.Best of luck,Mats Hagstrom, M.D.
