I am investigating my options for body contouring and possibly abdominal wall repair now that I'm done having kids. I've lost 35 pounds with diet changes in the past 6 months or so, and am adding moderate exercise. I'm wondering what my next steps are.... is there an ideal BMI before heading to a consult? How long should I maintain the ideal BMI? I'm at a "normal" weight for me and tend to gain weight (muscle) when I add exercise, and I'm already at a less-than-ideal BMI (34)... Help!

Answer: Weight loss before surgery Dear a0xbjzz,Generally speaking, you want to reach your goal weight before you consider a tummy tuck, otherwise your results will be suboptimal if you continue to lose weight after the surgery.Daniel Barrett, MD Certified, American Board of Plastic Surgery Member, American Society of Plastic Surgery Member, American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery

Answer: Tummy tuck Hello and thank you for your question. It is important to be at a stable weight prior to surgery. I make this decision based on individual skin laxity rather than strict BMI cutoffs. Based on your photograph, you are a candidate for a tummy tuck with liposuction. This can be done through a low incision, all completely below the bikini line. The belly button can be designed to look natural and have no scars on the exterior. Your muscles can also be plicated resulting in a flat abdomen. Make sure you specifically look at before and after pictures of real patients who have had this surgery performed by your surgeon and evaluate their results. The most important aspect is to find a surgeon you are comfortable with. I recommend that you seek consultation with a qualified board-certified plastic surgeon who can evaluate you in person. Best wishes and good luck. Richard G. Reish, M.D. FACS Harvard-trained plastic surgeon
