I'm about two weeks post op- one incision looks pretty smooth, the other is rather raised and I am concerned that it be more of a keloid type scar, though I've not had issues with these in the past.

Thank you for your question and photograph.  My recommendation is to wait a full 4 weeks before beginning scar treatment.  Best to follow the specific instructions given by your plastic surgeon.  Good luck.

You should discuss any cream application to your scars with your plastic surgeon. He/she can tell you what to use and when to start. My typical protocol is to begin applying silicone based scar gel or silicone scar strips at 3-4 weeks after surgery. You can use coconut oil, tea tree oil, Mederma, etc. but silicone is the only topical ingredient that has actually been consistently scientifically proven to improve scarring. A testament to its efficacy is that every major burn center in the US is using silicone on their burn scars.

Early wound healing is not indicative of the final scar. The lotions you mention are probably good moisturizers but have no special ability to make wounds better as far as I know. All the best,Talmage Raine MD
