Hi everyone, I am a 36 yr old Mother of 3 kids and I want to get a TT revision and BBL. I do have Sickle Cell Trait, but do not experience and problems with it at all. In 2007 I had hernia surgery and 2011 a TT and BR. I want ensure that I won't inherit anything bad.
Answer: Should not be an issue Good morning! It is smart that you are concerned about elective surgery with sickle cell trait- but you do not need to worry. If you have not had any issues with sickling in the past and have done well with your previous surgery, I anticipate no problems.Patients who only have the trait and have not had any issues with pain and/or splenic infarction can and do lead a normal life without issue. Having the trait means you inherited the gene from one of your parents but you do not have the disease- both parents must pass on the sickle cell trait for you to be symptomatic. I would keep you very well hydrated during the procedure to further insure a trouble free recovery.

Answer: TT Revision and BBL With Sickle Cell Trait The sickle cell trait may cause some problems, but they are very rare. They only occur under exceptional circumstances in which the oxygen available for breathing is very limited or during substantial overexertion in extremely hot weather such as unexpected exercise-related death (ERD). Your board certified plastic surgeon may require a screening by a hematologist prior to scheduling your surgery, but having the trait should not prevent the TT revision and BBL from occurring.Kenneth Hughes, MD, Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA

Answer: Sickle cell trait and cosmetic surgery Because you have had no problem with previous surgeries, I would not anticipate a problem with having a TT revision and BBL. I would, however, suggest you get medical clearance from your PCP or doctor who manages your sickle cell.Good luck!

Answer: BBL with sickle cell If you only have the trait, and you've had other surgeries before with no issues, then you should be fine. Getting a medical clearance note would be good.

Answer: Elective cosmetic surgery with sickle cell trait Dear sexycaramel713: Based on what you have shared, it sounds like you did well with your previous surgeries. If this is the case, then you should be fine to consider addtional procedures. Your asymptomatic sickle cell trait should not prevent you from having a revisional tummy tuck and BBL. Of course, a formal consultation and review of your medical history and physical exam is needed to give you any meaningful advice. It may be a good idea to visit with your family doc /internist for a annual check-up before your surgery (medical clearance). Please visit with a board certified plastic surgeon to learn more about your options. Best wishes,Dr. BasuHouston, TX
