A preauricular pit is a small hole in front of the ear that can have a sinus tract under the skin. This is a common congenital malformation that can be treated by a variety of surgeons including Facial Plastic Surgeons or Ear, Nose and Throat surgeons. These pits can be excised and repaired in such a way to minimize scarring, and can usually be covered by insurance.
It is not medically necessary to close the pit but it is simple enough to do if you want it done. takes about five minutes but there would be a tiny scar involved.
these can certainly be taken care of- and are typically covered by insurance. They cannot or should not be “closed” as they are cystic tracts that were formed congenitally- they can be very shallow but some can extend quite deep. The entire tract must be excised followed by a small skin closure- this will leave a very small scar- but no more pit! You can seen an ENT or facial plastic surgeon for this.Best wishes
