Discoloration and rippling after lipo - Is this something that can be fixed, and how? (photo)

Question

Just wanted to start of by saying that I am in no way complaining about my plastic surgeon. He is wonderful, and I understand everyone heals differently. I just wanted a second opinion on the results of my lipo procedure. After the first lipo procedure, I began healing with what looks like discoloration and webbing in my skin tone, and lumps and unevenness. We waited a year and my doc attempted a revision surgery. Results are same. Is this something that can be fixed, and how?

Mahalo for your photo.  The contour irregularities represent internal scar pulling the surface down toward the underlying muscle fascia.  This is caused by the trauma of liposuction and may be related to certain aggressive techniques and/or energy modalities.  Prevention is usually provided by aggressive massage in the first couple of months after the procedure to break down any fluid and collagen developing before the fibrous septae get thick and tough.  Once it has developed, improvement may be attempted by subcision, steroid injections, carboxytherapy, and in some cases, injection of stromal vascular fraction to bring concentrations of stem cells to the area.  Do discuss these issues with a board certified plastic surgeon for further information.

liposuction results are highly predictable.  The difference in outcome is purely related to the skill of the surgeon.  Your plastic surgeon may be a nice person but lacks good liposuction skills.  It’s very difficult to correct poorly done liposuction.  Taking a smooth surface and leaving at smooth is hard enough. Starting with a lumpy surface and making it smooth as many times harder.  This is especially true for people who have been over treated in which case correcting the outcome is almost impossible.  Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
