I would never advocate going to a tanning bed. It prematurely ages the skin and causes skin cancer. It will not harm your implants but it will darken your scars so protect them from the tanning rays for at least 6 months if you must do it.
Tanning should be avoided for several months after breast augmentation because the skin is sensitive and you will burn the breasts. In addition, the scar may darken permanently.
Keep the sun away from scars is your best bet. Scars behave differently in different people and can become too dark permanently (hyperpigmentation or dyschromia) if exposed to the sun. Better to spray tan if you want to hide it. Definitely use a strong SPF (>30) sunscreen on it even though it is hidden by your bathing suit as some sun goes through the fabric.#tanningpostop#scarmanagement
I would avoid a tanning bed all together as they provide damaging rays where the sun usually does not see. From a health standpoint they are not good. From a breast implant standpoint if you cover your scars so they dont' get hyperpigmented you could go in the tanning bed immediately.
First of all congratulations on having a breast augmentation. I hope you have had a great experience in the process and are pleased with everything. There is no minimum time to tan. In order for scars to heal well you need to keep them out of the sun/tanning beds for a year. Therefore, keep lots of sunscreen on your incisions during any UV exposure for a full year. Best wishes
yNot only can your scar be permanently hyperpigmented, you can burn your breast skin, cause wrinkling of your skin at an earlier age and risk getting skin cancer. Self tanning lotions may be safer.,
Thank you for your question. You can tanning after you are well healed after your surgery, however, you do not want to expose your incision to any UV rays. If the incisions are exposed they will permanently turn dark brown, so you will need to keep those incisions cover for a minimum of one year. I would avoid a tanning bed for at least 1-2 months after breast surgery since the breast skin may have diminished sensation initially. As far as the scars go, I would strongly suggest keeping them covered with surgical tape for at least six months and after that with a broad spectrum sunscreen. New scars that have unprotected sun or UVA/UVB exposure tend to darken and this can be permanent. Hope that helps.
You can go immediately but why would you? The uv light will not hurt your implants but it will hurt the overying skin rendering it unattractive over the long term and produce a high likely hood of skin cancers. White is wonderfull when it comes to tanning. Good luck
The question of tanning relates specifically to its potential impact on the scars used to placed the breast implants. Certainly tanning should be avoided in the first four to six weeks to ensure that you have good primary healing. After that tanning is acceptable as along as the incisions are covered by occlusive tapes to prevent the UV light from reaching them. Such coverage should be continued for up to six months after the procedure.
Breast implants alone, even in the supra pectoral space, will not correct the four major problems associated with droopy breasts:1. the areola are normally too big - you match that category2. the areola are too low on the breast mound - this is certainly true of your breasts3. ...
I've heard women with gel implants say that in cold weather situations, their breasts feel colder. This is presumably because the gel acts like an insulator and keeps the body heat from getting to the breasts. Otherwise temperatures compatible with life are not going to influence your...
This is exactly the kind of question best addressed to your surgeon as her or she may have very strong feelings on the issue.Best,Dr. Pyle
