When will I be able to cycle after inner thigh lipo?

Question

I'll will be getting liposuction on my inner thighs. The incision will be on my bikini line. Will the scars be uncomfortable when I ride a bike? Will cycling slow down the healing process?

In my own practice you would be permitted to resume running a bike as soon as it was comfortable to do so. This would probably be about two weeks. However only your surgeon should give you instructions for postoperative convalescence.

Thank you for your question.  I typically request that my patients refrain from any exercise (cycling included) and/or heavy lifting for 4 weeks following a liposuction procedure.  Exercise, high intensity cardio and heavy lifting can all increase the amount of swelling a patient can experience following their procedure.  I would recommend referring to your operating surgeons specific post-operative protocols.  Best of luck on your upcoming procedure!

Post operative regimens will vary from surgeon to surgeon. The restrictions on physical activity are meant to allow for unimpeded healing and minimize post procedural edema/swelling.Most surgeons will discourage heavy physical activity for anywhere from 4-6 weeks. Additionally, individual patient pain tolerances may often play a role in indicating when one may return to any significant activity (over and beyond what your surgeon recommends).Faithful use of a compression garment is always helpful as well in limiting post-operative swelling (especially after a return to exercise).As always, discuss your concerns with your board certified plastic surgeon.

Usually the recovery from inner thigh lipo is quick but you may want to take a week or two off of cycling for comfort reasons. Remember to wear your compression garments during the recovery to help with your swelling

Healing following liposuction takes months, but 4 weeks is the usual time one can resume normal activity. This time frame may be extended if the incision is painful. There is a good chance that cycling will cause some discomfort in the incision area, but this will depend on your healing. If there is no swelling or pain with cycling, it will not impair your healing. A good compression garment is helpful and always ask your doctor if you have any concerns.

Thank you for your question. I generally have my patients wait 4 - 6 weeks before returning to exercise following liposuction. High intensity exercise, such as cycling,  may result in more swelling, but will not likely change your end result. Please follow your plastic surgeons specific post-operative instructions regarding level of physical activity and use of compression garment. different surgeons will give you different answers. I tell my patients they can go cycling, running and work out at the gym three weeks after surgery. I utilize the Safe technique, which Dr S.Wall invented. There are different ways to perform lipo. I’m very excited about a relatively new high tech device called the Vibrastat. What kind of riding?  Road, gym, neighborhood. I ride a lot and can't imagine even a 20 miler before 1 month on a road bike. However. You should be ok if you can tolerate the discomfort. Since you will be a bit numb you could do some serious damage from rubbing. Good luck.

Good Afternoon and thank you for your question.  Although each surgeon will have their own specific post-operative instructions, generally it is best to avoid heavy lifting and heavy exercise for approximately 4-6 weeks and then start back slowly.  When you do cardio activity such as cycling, you raise your heart rate which can add to your swelling which can prolong the initial healing phase.With regard to the scars they are quite small and should not interfere with cycling.Always consult with your Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and follow their tailored instructions.Best of Luck, Dr. K.
