I had a breast augmentation but experienced a bleed on one side so an ER surgeon had to reopen my incision on the same day, stop the bleed and evacuate the hematoma. He removed the implant because he said it was too risky to keep for now until the bleeding stopped. How long do I need to wait after the removal to replace the implant?
Answer: Replacement of implant I would suggest giving your tissue about 3 to 6 months to heal, before re-implantation. Otherwise, the risk of infection and poorer healing is increased. You may want to check back with your plastic surgeon for his/her advice.

Answer: How long do I have to wait after Breast Implant Removal before I can get new implants replaced? I am sorry to hear about the complication you have experienced. As you know, this is a very unusual complication; it must have been extremely stressful having the procedure performed in an emergency room by someone other than your plastic surgeon. Timing for additional surgery will be best gauged by your plastic surgeon. Much will depend on the exact clinical situation; for example, if there are signs/symptoms of infection, you may need to be breast implant free for many months. Best wishes for an eventual outcome that you will be very pleased with.

Answer: When placing new implant. Wow! An ER physician removed your implant. Amazing! Typically hematoma is evacuated and express shirt as we try to salvage the implant. Meaning that we keep the implant. Since you have implant removed I would wait at least three months till out the tissues to solve and get back to a normal state. I would deathly check with your plastic surgeon to get his or her recommendations.

Answer: Time between breast implant removal and reimplantation. Each surgeon has different protocol for reoperation. Typically, the time between surgeries is 6 months to a year. Consult with your surgeon as he or she understands the scope of the surgery and the specifics about you.

Answer: How long before I can have new implants placed? As with other physician replies, I am also surprised that your implant was removed in an emergency room and not in an operating room by your original plastic surgeon. I will not make any further remarks about that.As for the timing to place new implants, the general answer for hematoma as the cause of removal is up to six months after surgery. If you still have breast hardness and scar tissue it may be best to wait longer. Photographs and a physical exam would be very helpful at this point. Before your next surgery, please make sure that there has been adequate blood testing to ensure that you do not have prolonged coagulation or bleeding times or what we call a coagulopathy. Do not take aspirin, Motrin , other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications , or fish oil for 2-3 weeks before surgery. And also please make sure that your procedure is performed by a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, who has plastic surgery privileges at a reputable local hospital. Best of luck in your implant replacement. Daniel Golshani MD
